Is there a difference between the US and Japanese versions of the Sharp 10000?

Only difference I am aware of (besides serviceability/warranty) is that the Japanese unit ships with an odd power cable with a ground terminal wire. You can however simply swap it for the power cord used for a regular computer monitor or PC. The other difference is that you'll need the codes to switch the menus to English which if you purchase overseas you should be provided with.

The Japanese and US models are the same other than what power cord is supplied and a different serial number stamp. I have a US model and it was making the dreaded noise at times. I think someone else on the whine thread also had a US model with the problem.

I can only speak definitively for my Japanese model which does have an intermittant issue with fan noise.

However from the researching I've been doing on the issue the problem seems fairly equally divided between the US and Japan models.

This makes sense because the units are 100% identical except the service menu is set different (not to show English on the menus) and after production-packaging, such as a different power cord between US and Japanese models. It would not surprise me if both models of the units were made on the same assembly line.

For example, thirdkind had this noise issue with his US model just like I did, then he sent it back for another US model which had the same problem.

Maybe he just doesn't understand that pjs make a noise. He needs to do a side by side comparison to tell and he'll find out that the 10k is the quietiest one out there. I did that test for many different pjs.

Doesn't the Japanese version have a D5 connector that we don't use in the US? It replaces one of the other connectors on the US model. If so, you would need a breakout cable to use it.

As far as I know all the inputs are identical. What would the D5 connector be for? If you have specific questions or want me to verify any of the inputs let me know and I'll take a look at the back panel for you.

As as I undestand it, it doesn't matter who you purchase your unit from or where you get it (whether in person or by mail) - a Japanese model needs to go back to Sharp Japan for service. Regarding conversion of the menus this is information that the dealer you purchase your unit from in Japan should be able to supply.
