Sharp Aquos 45GD7U HDMI capability?

454 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ApoDoc
Over on the hardware forum, there is a thread on the new H20 sattellite boxes and whether the HDMI output is capable of sending Dolby Digital 5.1. I have my H20 connected to the 45" Sharp model (GD7U) but if I connect only the HDMI, the TV does not send DD 5.1 from its optical output to the AV receiver. Someone offered the following theory:

"What's happening, I believe, is that since the Sharp does not have a way to output 5.1(not enough speakers/channels..) it "tells" the source device(H20) to only send 2.0 data as that is all it's capable of using. That 2.0 data in turn gets sent back out the digital out from the display and that's why you have only 2.0 at the receiver."

I cannot find anything in the Sharp owner's manual to determine if this may be true but it sounds logical. Do any of you know if the TV may be doing this and also given the speakers are detachable, might this change if I removed the speakers?

Any insight would be appreciated from other Sharp Aquos owners.

Thanks,

Paul

Yes that is absolutely what is happening. I know of *no* TV today which accepts DD over HDMI (there is always hope some future TVs will start accepting DD over HDMI). They all just tell the source device they are 2-channel capable and the source sends them 2-channel PCM.

If you want DD over HDMI you need to use a newer receiver with HDMI switching.

However that shouldn't stop you from running a digital optical/coax cable from your STB to your receiver like you've been doing for ages. If the TOSLINK or SPDIF is forced to 2-channel by virtue of the HDMI connection being 2-channel then that is a design bug.

sfhub,

Thanks for the feedback. I was afraid of that. Ideally, the TV should just pass through the signal to it's optical output rather than query the hardware on what is capable of. I won't need to upgrade my AV receiver for quite some time so will just use the optical output from the STB to it. I am getting DD 5.1 no problem that way.

I was wondering if anyone has had an issue with the H20's HDMI output to the LC45GD7U? Does the DirecTV box need to be activated for the HDMI to work?
