Hey everyone,

Read an interesting article on CNN today (dated 10/3/00) that gives some interesting details in the ongoing video recorder industry.

One thing that was particularly interesting (and wrong?) was that ReplayTV units are being made by Panasonic (Showstopper) and by Sharp (? really ?)

Hmm....checked Sharp's website and didn't find anything about them making digital recorders.

Anyone heard anything about this?

Derek

That's an interesting article, and it linked to another article that I had missed about the ReplayTV deal with Universal Pictures: Replay TV gets movie deal

Here's a quick snippet from the article:
Quote:
Replay and Universal did not reveal the terms of their one-year pact. But Universal seems to be betting that Replay users won't be tempted to fast-forward through its "ads," which will feature movie trailers and previews.
Now there's a good idea. If there were trailers and previews for upcoming movies on the box somewhere that I could chose to watch or chose to ignore, I'd be up for that, as long as they don't use up too much hard-drive space. This would be another way for Replay to generate income from non-intrusive advertizing.

TiVo is doing this. That's why all new TiVo have 12 extra hours of recording time built in.

Yeah, I think the deal with Universal might be for something like that ReplayTV show that's on really early tuesday mornings. I recorded the one yesterday and it was all movie trailers. I don't really get what that has to do with ReplayTV. I just deleted it but for someone like my brother who loves the full length trailers that you don't get to see except in movies, I guess it's pretty cool. There is no way they could upload them over the phone line to our machines, it would take way too much time. They *COULD* make our machines automatically record that show (not guarenteed) and we'd have to delete it if we didn't want to see the stuff. That might not be a bad idea.
