I am considering purchasing the LC-37GD6U or the LC-37HV6U. Does anyone think it is worth paying the extra $900 to go for the newer LC-37GD6U. From what I gather above the biggest difference is the GD6U has the cable card built in. It looks like the design is a little better too and from Sharps site it seems as if the screen maybe somewhat brighter on LC-37GD6U. Has anyone seen these two in person? I appreciate any help.

I have seen them both many times and there is little difference on paper in the specs. But.....it's a whole different generation. Comes from a different factory and the panel looks better in so many ways. GD6 has the speakers on the bottom and has the digital tuner with the cable card slot.

GFish4:

The Sharp G-series is superior to the HV-series in the following ways:

1. Better blacks.

2. Better contrast.

3. MUCH better viewing angle.

4. "Cable-card" will suck. (i.e.: No directories, none of the click-On-Demand-stuff--which you may be into but I am not, being a firm convert to D*...).

FWIW,

PS: Rather than "GD", go for the plain ol' "G"(w/o ATSC built-in). You really, really(!) don't want a built-in ATSC of any sort, the way things are changing so rapidly nowdays. Anyway's, that's what I intend to do(replacing a Sharp LC30HV2U)....

I need the GD Series, because of the speakers being on the bottom, so it will fit in the entertainment center. I have not seen the normal G series with the speakers on the bottom - wish they had one like that. What is the purpose of the cable card? I have Time Warner cable and think that I still need to use their HD Tivo Cable Box to get their HD and digital service. Will I be able to do that with the GD series?

Thanks for explaining the difference of the GD series compared to the HV series. Sounds like it is worth the extra money. Were you happy with DVD and SD quality on your Sharp LCD?

OK. You're correct. No LC37G6(Lower-speaker)series. Since you've already got an"entertainment center", with presumably some decent speakers, Dolby, some surround-sound already, here's what I'd do:

1. Go for the Sharp LC37G4U(which has the wonderfully-separate AV box and a PC card slot in front).

2. Dump the side speakers, resulting in Display-only dimensions of 37-7/64"W x 21-18/32"H x 2-25/32"D. (or lay the speakers down behind your rack somewheres...).

3. Resulting remaining weight to hang on your wall= 30.9lb(!).

Me neither! No problem! Just detach the LC37G4U's speakers, screw some cup-hooks on the back wall of your cabinet, hang-em-up and go for it!

Won't even have to unplug them--they've both got a couple-three feet of speaker-wire tucked in there already, as I recall....

:D

PS: And do a deal with whomever you're buying it from: Either carry off the CRT or move it up the second floor bedroom, free. (Preferably the former...).

OK. Remember all. HDMI is merely DVI + Audio. A convenience only. Any DVI + discrete audio cables will be totally-equivalent in PQ and sound quality to HDMI. (How shall I say? Wanna sell some more cables? Monsters, anybody?) :D :D :D

I am aware that HDMI is like DVI with audio cables, but DVI without HDCP, or just plain DVI isn't flag protected and my understanding is that HDMI is like DVI/HDCP with audio. Is this not correct?
