According to Visual Apex reps, Sharp has decided in their great wisdom to stop any further LC-45GX6U deliveries to on-line shops and restrict sales to brick-and-mortars ONLY. This finally explains the crush of back-orders at every e-tailer on the net(with VERY few expensive exceptions).

Not a very smart move in my opinion, not that it's worth much;) I have a LC-45GX6U on backorder, but if there is another delay I will just default to a 50" HD Panny. And this is where their plan goes bad. I can't be the only one that is going to say the hell with LCD and just go with a plasma. I'm sure they will lose many, many sales. Oh well, their loss, not mine. I'm quite sure I'll be able to forget all about the LCD after that Panny's hanging on the wall, although I have to say I would prefer the Sharp if only they would sell me one.

Note: This is for the LC-45GX6U only, I'm not sure about other sets

Gooddoc,

I'm surprised no one's replied to you on this. If this rumor is true, it's really bad.

I guess for the first time in my life, I might be pretty lucky by being one of the "early buyers".

Can anyone else confirm this? If this is true seems like a stupid decision IMHO as your hurting your enthusiast crowd. I guess Sharp must be having trouble supplying the B&M retailers.

I got word this afternoon from Bob at plasmaextreme that their distributer got 5 LC-45GX6Us in stock this afternoon. If this is true then I will go ahead and get a panel from plasmaextreme then.

Gooddoc,

I'm been staring at your post since you made it. I'm just stunned. I've been serously considering the LC-45GX6U since it was announced and followed every thread about it on this forum. In the last few days, after reading the reports of the early buyers, I had overcome my sticker shock and decided I would buy one next month. That decision was based on the sub-$7k pricing of some of the on-line merchants. If this story does indeed turn out to be true and the only availability is going to be through B&M's at close to MSRP, I will just take the Sharp off my short list. Like you said, a 50" plasma is looking better and better. Bad decision, Sharp.

I heard they want to get it in the showrooms first. That somewhat makes sense. As a *general rule*, people will not buy something they haven't seen. Although, the rule seems to be broken in this case (me included).

However, Goodguys was supposed to have a shipment on Oct 9th to their main distribution center and it has been pushed back a month. Online retailers seem to keep pusing back their date. Plasmaconcepts pulled it off their website telling me due to low supply. So, seems like something may be up with production?? I think mike53 said 600/month and 2k backordered. Seems like only 30 - 100 have come in so far. *major guess*

I hope mine survives shipment or it looks like it's a 50 plasma for me..

Well, as I said, this was according to a Visual Apex rep that actually looked into it and got back to me. All I can say is I believed him. Is it a fact, no, I wouldn't go that far, but all the backorders and "unexpected" MIA shipments from Sharp to multiple "discount" e-tailers makes sense if that piece of info is added to the mix. My guess is that there will be a limited supply of units that are already circulating that will find there way to some of these "discount" "2nd tier" e-tailers, then it will be a price bonanza for all the B&M's and a select few e-tailers that are charging near MSRP.

I wish Mike53 would jump in and give us some "unofficial" "facts";)

I still think there is a production problem. First it was end of July, then Aug, then Sept... Now the shipment made it, but where are they? They have limited supply and chose to give to B&M..? But, GG currently suffers the same fate...?

I am guessing Mike53 will chime in at some point.

Well...I wouldn't say wrong.

The sharp is 45" and 9k. I believe there are 50" plasmas for cheaper than that. The average yahoo walking into Fry's is like "huh? I gotta pay more for a smaller screen??" In that way, I would say they are "expensive".

My buddy who sells @ tweeter said pretty much the same thing, also.

You and I may not think it is expensive because it is a 1080p flat panel. But, we don't buy TVs from Fry's, do we? :)

BTW, saw the same PDP at Fry's SD last night. Agreed, it looked as fuzzy as a bunny rabbit.

My point was just that it looks like B&Ms aren't getting them either.

cheers,

Jeremy

FYI local Tweeters does not plan to stock the LC45GX6U (they said its too expensive to stock in store) but said you could special order for list price. Ship date? sometime in November....

I had a pre-order for the Sharp 45". I called the online dealer when I hadn't heard anything for a while, and the rep told me that they had to raise the selling price from the pre-order price because Sharp didn't like the dealer's pricing. The dealer gave me free shipping and the cost to me was a little more than the pre-order price but it was still a pretty good deal especially if it turns out that the 45" availability online news turns out to be true. Mine shipped on the 14th. Hopefully I get it early next week.

Dennis,

Thanks, I'm waiting on my order from PC Mall. They're telling me 10/28 will now be the delivery date(last ETA was 10/13). I started this thread because I think it's important for all to know what retailers are not to be trusted. They should know that the things they say will end up as common knowledge, at least on these forums. Gotta keep their feet to the flames. Time will tell whether Visual Apex was being truthful, or just trying to make a plasma sale. It would be nice if Mike53 would chime in with a reality check on this thread.

On a separate note, are there any others on this forum with a backorder with PC Mall? Misery loves company, so it would be nice to know I'm not alone:D.

It sounds like a supply and demand issue to me. They just introduced this, the bleeding edge is hot for a real 40+ 1080P flat panel and it's the only one out there. The demand may be small compared to a 50" RPTV but their production/QC process may not be turning up enough to meet that.

I wonder what the supply will be after the holidays? Even at $5000 most FP displays are priced beyond the reach of the masses!!! This sounds like a pre-Christmas marketing ploy designed to get the consumer to pay top $$ for this “must-have†item.

This does seem very odd if its true.I would say a very big mistake.I love the new Sharp LCDs I bought one myself [32"].but to cut off online sales where I'd say most peolpe can offord these expensive toys is just stupid.I bought a plasma a few years ago and a Sharp LCD recently and without online dealers I would never have bought them. Its not about being able to offord one its about getting good value. This would be a gigantic mistake in my opinion. J.H.

I meant to respond earlier, forgot. Just wanted to say it was the sub 6k prices that made me make the leap.

Mike53 did warn us that he expected the low cost e-tailers to not get stock of the Sharp 45" LCDs until after December. Not sure if he was referring to all e-tailers, but I am pretty certain PC Mall and Ecost would definitely fall under this category.

I have to admit that the PC Mall price is attractive, but in the end it comes down to the fact that I am going to have more free time away from work in Nov-Dec. I'd rather spend a few extra hundred dollars and get one so I can use it during this time rather than wait until Jan when things heat back up at work.

I do have my limits thou. Any total cost over $7K is currently just way to much money for my tastes.

I had the same dilemma. Wait until the discounters had in stock (at least one to two months in my opinion) or go ahead get it now. I canceled my DTVCITY order (they couldn't give me any dates) and contacted Jason at Onecall.com (his AVSFORUM name is JKA/V). He gave me an good/palatable deal below $7000. Just a few bills over the DTVCITY price. Give him a PM. He was great to deal with and totally knowledgable. I think they still have them in stock.

Mine should be here early next week.

I saw those as well, but didn't really expect that anyone would actually deliver a unit for under 6k until 05 qtr 1. I would love to be wrong on that.
