will the new sharp xv-z2000 be bright enough for a 12' wide, screen, 165'' dia. at 1200 to 1500 lumens it seems it will be bright enough? some might think a 12' wide screen is to big, but i look at this way if 500,000 aprox. pixels is enough resoulition for a 8' wide, screen than shouldn't 1,000,000 aprox. pixels be enough for a 12' wide screen? A 12' x 6.75' = 81 sq ft screen ,should take 1000 ture lumens is this correct?

right now i set 10' back from a 8' wide screen, crt, ampro 2000, 600 lumens, 480p, and i would like something bigger and brighter, anybody else out there running screens this big? i know 165'' dia wont look as good as 100'' dia. but i'm looking more for the ''wow'' movie theater effect, seeing a little screen door effect dosen't scare me.

I've got the wall space and a big enough room for the 12' wide screen so i hope i can find a dlp projector, no lcd, that will do the job. thanks for the help.

do a foot lambert calculation.

lumens X screen gain / square feet of screen = foot lamberts.

use 70% of manufacturers specified lumens and shoot for a screen size that matches your viewing preferences.

15 foot lamberts for a dimmer movie look

50 for a strong punchy sports look

somewhere in between for best of both worlds.

Theaters are about 12-16 fl, direct view CRT TVs are around 50 fl and Plasmas are often around 70 fl.

dont forget your environment you'll be viewing in. a dimmer look(14 fl) may work in a dedicated light controlled theater but NOT with a little ambient light present like more of a media room.

I prefer and recommend 30-50. This generally pleases most that don't want a cave. I've been at 14 and was not happy

Why not go to 14' then!

seriously your gonna see pixels. DLP is low res. Try looking at this new Canon sx50. Brighter, higher rez, no rainbows and virtually no screen door as it is LCOS.

Also do not rule out LCD. There are units with pixels smoothing technology that WILL look better than the Sharp Z2000

thanks for the advice, my home theater is painted black and i have total light control, i've been thinking about the panisonic ae-700 but i wonder how it's black level and contrast ratio would compare to dlp HD2+ projectors, i watch alot sci-fi and darker movies.

ae700 is gonna have better shadow detail. This is what I would recommend. for around $1800 it simply cant be beat for value.

have you seen a single chip DLP? or are you just taking advice from others?

go see each of the three technologies new LCD, DLP and LCOS

when you're talking this kind of money, try to see the units first. There's probably many forum members around you that would love to show off their goods. find em

"1200 to 1500 lumens it seems it will be bright enough"

When properly calibrated that will be more like 300-400 L. You can help with a Dalite Hipower, gain over 2, and it's not an expensive screen.

I'd also look seriously at the AE700 for half the money of the Sharp.

I believe the limit for these is 6' high without a seam, so 128" wide for a 16:9 version. That is still pretty big though. I believe it also requires a case that is about a 12' wide with black on the sides of the screen. It can be had in 116" wide with a frame that would be a little over 10' wide. An AE700 with a High Power screen like this with the projector on a shelf or stand overhead or on a table could be a very good price performer.
