Sharp XVZ 9000 price?

1352 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Jim Lauritzen
I just took a look at the Sharp 9000 today, and I was very impressed. I didn't see any rainbows at all (but I saw them repeatedly in the next room on a Yamaha DPX1). I've been considering a Sanyo PLV60HT, which would be around $5000. The store where I saw the Sharp had a price of $10k. I don't think that the picture was worth double what the Sanyo sells for, but I'm sure that there are other avenues to purchase this unit. Can anyone recommend any other sources with a lower price on the Sharp?

Thanks,

jj

I have seen pricing in the US being mentioned of around $7000 so that is where you should be looking at price wise.

If you can get it for $7k more power to you. According to Alan, Sharp cracked down on all Internet distribution (e.g. they prohibited it) which means that the only authorized places to get it are all going to be higher...

Around here, I couldn't get down anywhere near $7k...but I still bought it and can't wait for it to get here! Halfway through a DIY screen to use until my cabinet can get rebuilt with a GreyHawk...WooHoo! :)

Jon when will it be arriving?

I am also looking to buy the Sharp and have seen a number of "you can get it close to $7k" posts. Has anyone actually bought it close to this price point? If anyone can provide me and jeffthx with a good source to buy please advise (even if the price is a bit higher). If you don't want to post, please send a pm. Thanks.
I saw the Sharp for the first time today as well. At Audio King in Edina.

I had seen the Sony 10HT earlier this year in a Minnetonka store, and was unprepared for how much better the Sharp would look. The blacks of course, but also the 3-D look. (I think I actually ducked when a race car tire seemed to be flying straight out of the screen)

I wish that they would have had a larger screen for the Sharp, it could not have been more than 6 feet wide. (I could not determine what kind of screen it was either)

This was my first time seeing any kind of DLP. I was relieved that I did not see any rainbows (but I am not sure that I knew what to look for anyway).

I also saw the Yamaha in another larger viewing room which was much too brightly lit. I was disappointed with the amount of light spill on the 4:3 screen around the 16:9 frame. I guess that it would have been even worse if I could have darkened the room. I assume a calibration may of helped.

I was comtemplating getting an inexpensive 4:3 like the NEC LT150 and not spending the extra for a 16:9 until copy protection issues were settled, but I found the Yamaha light spill very objectionable.

The good thing was I did not see any rainbow effects on the Yamaha either. Either I am one of the lucky or just don't know what to look for.

I have known Audio King to deal on price before. You won't get it for 7K, but they just might take a 20% discounted offer.

It is going to become increasingly difficult to get a Sharp anywhere but your local dealer. They did indeed pull all of their internet dealers. Even if you find it on the internet somewhere, it means that either these companies bought them before this policy was started or they are hopeing that they are going to be able to get them as they sell them-which I'm told by Sharp is not the case. You'll probably have to look at your local dealer for purchase. I know-it stinks, but what can you do? :(

Thanks!
Spizz,

Sorry my response took a while -- for some reason, I don't think I got the email notification on your question...

Anyways, I expect my Sharp in about a week and a half -- Somewhere around the 8th. Which, unfortunately, is also when I leave for a 4 day business trip...Arg. :^)

Anyways, I have built a DIY screen as a temporary measure, bought some BetterCables, a Pronto, and a new receiver...I am pretty much good to go. :^) I plan to use it without an external scaler for a while before breaking down and getting an NRS if needed...

I am also planning to order an HTPC through AVS but haven't sat down to do enough research to figure out what I need --

Why? Not that I ming talking about it at this point. My wife already accuses me of being obsessed :)

There's a regular dealer who is posting Sharps on Audiogon under video classifieds for $7000, but my guess is that once Sharp finds out about it, he'll be strangled.
Although I have not seen the Sharp yet, I would be very pressed to part with $9-10K for this unit. As one who is not too sophisticated or demanding, in terms of image, I would probably go with a Sanyo PLV-60 or wait and see what the new Hitachi LCOS are going to be like. They are priced at about $9K MSRP and people are talking about $7K retail. Maybe they have solved the noise, heat , and calibration poblems.
Jason Turk,

I thought I saw earlier that AVS would be selling the Sharp. We can still buy through you, right? Or, did I miss something.

Thanks,
