Comparison between Shawshank DVD and US version of blu-ray. It'd be nice to see the same frames from the UK version. Thread will be done Xylon-style

Note: The framing for the two are a bit different. If you look at post #2, you'll see Freeman's Belt. The DVD looks zoomed in a bit

Thanks.

What are your overall impressions of the PQ of this title?

Noise filtering? This is a Warner title. They don't do that!

Seriously, I have not seen this title yet, and I would like to see more captures before passing judgment, but so far (based on two captures) these look a bit "suspicious" in terms of filtering/DNR.

Rob, I don't know if my opinion on PQ holds any weight, but I would say buy this title.

To me, on my system, it was very rich and a pleasure to watch plus it's a bona fried classic, imo.

The soundtrack is excellent as well.

That's good to know Milt! I've seen this movie so many times that I doubt that I will buy it, but it is sitting at number 2 in my Netflix Queue. Unfortunately it has a "Very Long Wait".

Yeah, I commented on this a few weeks ago in the tier thread, but nobody paid any mind to it. Obviously the title isn't Tier 0 as it's currently ranked, here's what I said.

One of my favorite movies ever, but can't really agree with placement in tier 0. While it looked stunning for a film that's ~15 years old, it just can't compare with other live action tier 0 titles that it's placed around such as Shoot 'Em Up, Doomsday, and The Incredible Hulk. Somewhere in Tier 1 is fair, but current placement suggests the quality of the movie may be influencing picture quality assessment.

Also, I saw a few strange compression errors in some black fade in/fade outs. Note though, that I wouldn't consider these "compression errors" any sort of problem that would keep the title out of tier 0 if I believe the picture quality was, in general, as good as those titles I just mentioned. I'm only really bringing it up to see if anyone else saw it as well.

Set up information:

Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma TH-42PZ80U

1080p resolution

20,000:1 static contrast ratio - 1,000,000:1 dynamic

Viewing distance - 6 feet away.

I'm surprised that you can't read the Bible text, but still, even though a little soft, it's good enough.

Then this BD certainly isn't worth viewing/buying. We must make a stand and stop buying these flawed BDs. Until we do, the studios will continue to spew out this crap and expect us to spend our money on it.

Yep this Blu-ray is total crap!!!!

I'm sure everyone will skip it due to it being so obviously horrible and Warner will be putting a new version out any month now.

I have only given it one spin since I bought it. But there wasn't any thing that yanked me out of the picture like some disks do. Some of the faces did give me the impression they had been to the DNR shop but not any where near as bad as Scary Movie/Patton.

It's not tier 0 but I do think it is a buy.

They probably got lost in the mess that I probably started when I brought up the voting system
The sound is a definite step-up.

From looking at most Warner comparisons betwen BD and DVD it appears that they do their filtering before it reaches the encoders... Perhaps their master has the filtering already built in, whereas Universal tends to do it when encoding. I cant say for sure.

I just bought an ITV DVD of Shawshank, and the picture quality was almost as bad as VHS, and the text had these white lines around it. In fact, If I recorded it off the TV it would look better, and the DVD was Stereo as well..

This leads me up to the ITV Blu Ray of Shawshank. Yes there is one, it's only £9 on HMV. So are there two Blu Rays of Shawshank? Is the ITV Blu Ray any good?

I would like to see the ITV DVD, and Blu Ray images if possible.. the DVD would be a right laugh.
