Shelf support in front of center channel speaker

2168 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  acras13
How detrimental to sound quality would a setup with a center channel speaker behind one of the middle bars on this media cabinet be? Would it significantly change sound quality (dealbreaker)? Would really prefer not to have this bar in the middle but it's hard to balance all the different factors like tv size, cabinet size to fit bookshelf speakers on top, etc. without building something custom. Thanks!

A solid object in front of a speaker will have some effect on audio quality due to reflections. The smaller the object the less effect. There's really no way to predict whether or not it would be objectionable to any specific individual. The best course of action would be to try it and see what your ears tell you.

If you think there's enough of an impact on audio quality there are several options. You could raise the TV so a center speaker could fit immediately under it. You could add a shelf on top of the TV to place the center immediately above it. Or you could add a small extension in front of the center post to hold the center speaker in front of the obstruction.

Your two best options are:
1. Put a wide center speaker directly under your TV on top of the cabinet (the excellent Emotiva C2+ would be my rec, it's long enough for the wide base of your TV).

2. Put a center speaker on a center speaker stand IN FRONT OF the cabinet --- since it looks like a pretty shallow cabinet, this would probably be the best way to go.

Mount the TV to the wall and plact the centre on top of the stand.

It's hard to get a center that can do dialog well so adding any obstruction between the speaker and main listening position is less than ideal. But hey, if you already have the gear, it would be worth trying it to decide for yourself.

Another option a friend did was to have a custom center support that positioned the center channel above his TV, aimed at the MLP. It was basically a 3' high tube with a plate and lip on top to hold the center somewhat tipped forward. It seemed to work OK in his situation but is likely to be problematic if distance to the MLP changes.

I took a different path, putting the gear on one rack and the TV on a separate table. The equipment rack sits behind the left front channel though it could be placed in other locations. The TV table was custom built by a local furniture vendor and is sized to handle a 77" TV. It's also high enough that the center rests on a stand below the table. It has worked out well though it wasn't the cheapest route, and it took months to get that table.

There you go... a few different options.

Duplicate that post, move it and the new one to each side of your center, simple carpentry.
Metal carpentry....

If you have to use that stand , what about offsetting the TV to one side so the center can be in the opening rather than behind the post , move the stand so the TV is centered where you want it
