In its first consumer collaboration, studio monitor specialists Barefoot Sound worked with Shinola Detroit on the reborn Bookshelf Bluetooth speakers.

Shinola is a Detroit-based company that specializes in U.S. made goods with good design and craftsmanship. Among the audio products it offers , you'll find headphones (the Canfield collection ), the Runwell Turntable ($2500) and Runwell Bookshelf Speakers ($1500/pair). The Bookshelf model ($1500/pair) is now reborn and redesigned from the ground up. It is the first speaker system from Shinola to offer Bluetooth. It is also the first time Barefoot Sound—which has a solid reputation among record producers and artist—has collaborated on a consumer product.

The new Shinola Bookshelf is engineered to bring the precision demanded by music producers to home listeners. "We couldn’t think of a better partner to help re-launch our bookshelf speakers," said Shinola’s CEO, Tom Lewand. "Thomas Barefoot’s know-how and reputation in the pro-audio world married with our commitment to quality and our design ethos has produced a stunning speaker system.  We are so proud of what Barefoot and our audio team have created and can’t wait for our customer to hear it."

These Shinola Bookshelf monitor-style speakers are individually assembled and tested in Portland Oregon at the Barefoot Sound factory.

"Working with Shinola has been an amazing experience," says Barefoot Sound founder Thomas Barefoot. "I grew up in Pittsburgh which has a similar riches-to-rust story as Detroit.  Creating US jobs while building incredible products is Barefoot Sound’s mission.  I can’t think of a better way to enter the consumer space than partnering with a company that so deeply shares our core values.  I’m very excited about this collaboration and bringing studio level sound to a wider audience with this new bookshelf speaker."

The new Bookshelf with Bluetooth launches on July 12. As it happens, I have a pair in for review and you can check back here on the 12th to read that. Suffice to say that American quality and craftsmanship and know-how is alive and well thanks to the likes of Shinola Detroit. These are uncommonly high-quality speakers that deserve a deep dive and discussion, so there's more to come.
