I'll be re locating offshore in about a year and wanted to take either a Plasma or LCD display ( about 50") with me.

Provided they travel in the original cartons which would be safer? (less chance of getting damaged in transit)

Thanks

Hey there,

I've been planning on taking a 40" LCD with me overseas as well, considering that where I live,

TV's (and most electronics) cost up to 2x as much as in the states.

I'd recommend taking an LCD as they are much lighter than plasmas (sometimes twice as light)

A 40" should be just under 21kilograms (46.3lbs) which is the luggage limit for economy class (on Aeroflot, anyways).

And a 37" is about the dimentions of an average hardcase luggage.

Personally, I won't take the TV in it's original box (just the TV with the orther parts like stand and remote seperatly)

just in case the customs might claim I'm exporting a "product" and not a personal belonging.

If the luggage is overweight, you can always just pay a small fine, something like $50 for every 5 kilo's (11lbs) over. (again, may only apply to Aeroflot)

If you don't want to take it as luggage but send as mail, then I really have no idea... sorry.

Since I'm going to America regardless, I may as well pick up a TV while I'm there.

I dont believe TV's made for America are compatible with the power in other countries. I know Europe has 50 hz and US TV's are 60 hz. Also I think with Europe the tuners are different. Europe has PAL and America has NTSC/ATSC. I may be wrong on that but someone correct me if I am please.

Newer American TV's should be compatible with both 220v and 50hz signals,

based on the fact that I've seen TV's like the sony XBR4 in stores, and on the back the power supply is clearly labeled as "110~220v" and under the inputs was a 50/60hz label, So I'm guessing they are. (this was in a PC richards in NY)

Maybe only the tuner won't work (fixed with converter or passing it through a European receiver), but HD signals 720/1080p are region agnostic I believe.
