Yup, I'm still in the thinking it through stage.

Anybody build or order a less than standard height door? In order to maximize clearance for aisles and seating options in a small room, I need to put a door on the theater side beneath a steel beam. Current distance from concrete floor to bottom of steel beam is approx 6'2".

"Short Door "

Those come standard on the short bus, do they not?:D

That is short!!!! You will either need to cut a solid wood door down or prepare to put a new strip of wood (bottom fill) in a hollow core. You are better off with the solid either way you look at it, in my opinion.

I had the exact same thing for a doorway under a beam. One thing I ran into is I bought a pre-built door with frame and door knob cut out and found if I had cut the bottom off the door the door knob would have been a lot lower than normal. I ended up tearing the frame apart, cutting the top of the side frames and the top of the door then rebuilding it. That way the hinges and door knob were at the proper height.

I hear ya ElCid. I'm still in the planning stages and have same problem.

If I build the wall containing the door on the outside of the beam, I

loose about 4" in room width and gain a funky doorway header or shorten

the door and build the wall up underneath the steel beam. I'm a little

worried about the acoustics/isolation of building a stud wall connected

to a steel beam supporting the whole house.
