Should I buy a plasma before moving?

Hello everyone,

Here's a quick back story: I live in Oklahoma City and I hate it. I'm actively trying to move back to Austin and interviewing for jobs. My best guess is I will be moving back in 2-4 months. I make a good living here, but I am having trouble letting myself buy anything because I keep thinking "Then it's just one more thing I have to move when I go back".

That said, I'm bummed and really need a pick me up. I've decided I want to purchase the samsung 64" PNF8500 plasma TV.

How risky and foolish would it be to buy this thing today, knowing I have to transport it in a uhaul for a 6 hour drive a few months later? Let's assume I keep ALL original packaging and can pack it up just as tightly as it came, wrap it in a blanket, and keep it upright and tied to the wall. Are plasmas that risky to transport that I should wait until moving, or should I be fine? I'm not looking for financial advice here, or lectures on impulse spending, just the risk factor for something to go wrong.

That's the thing. I've never owned a plasma before. My first instinct was to wait, but then I thought "Hey, they don't seem to have a problem transporting it on the truck to best buy".

You don't think securing it in original packaging/foam makes it safe enough to travel?

The devil is still on my back. I want a new toy to play with.

Then buy it with a credit card that will replace it if it is damaged within 90 days of purchase so you are at least somewhat covered.

I can also get it brand new for about $2700 and am afraid the price will spike (Is the samsung plasma series in danger of being discontinued the way the ZT60 has become or am I fine to expect the price to stay the same a few months down the line?)

No idea, to me it's about $2000 to much at that price.

You are very opinionated! Since you clearly don't think much of the samsung plasma, which line is your favorite right now?

I wanted the color vibrance of plasma but I'm pretty concerned about unknown future lighting situations. If i'm used to LED screens, the samsung 8500 seemed like the safest plasma purchase that would still give me some of the brightness I"m used to.

Not that I have a bad opinion of the TV, I am just old, and would never pay that kind of money for a TV that will only last about 3-4 years and is a tiny fixes size well under 110"

As someone interested in accurate calibration, I would also not bother with plasma since there is no way to defeat the ABL ..

Absolutely. I moved here without knowing a single person last April. I still don't really have any friends here, but have a lovely social life back in Austin. I came here to do some work and make some money, but money is kind of useless when there's nothing to do and you can't even buy the things you want.

That's my sob story. It's a temporary one, but it sucks when you're in the moment. Will a plasma make me feel better? YES.

Hauled my 2010 Panasonic GT25 in its original packaging from Houston to Shreveport so my now 99 year old uncle could watch Wimbledon in 3d. Hauled it back to Houston with no problems. While I was up for Thanksgiving I found a 2013 Panasonic 50S60 at Sears. Bought it. Loaded in my van. Went to my uncles and unloaded and set it up in my aunt's bedroom. Hauled it back to Houston and set it up in the home theater to compare it to my projector and GT25. After a week I moved it to my bedroom. If you are careful and choose smooth roads it should be no problem. After all it came all the way from Korea(I think)! (Each move was done without anyone else's assistance.)

I can think of warmer ways to get a workout. Like getting off my rear end and mowing my yard for the first time this year.

Airscapes, do what you want that's within your budget and will make you happy.

I don't know anything about the TV you've settled on, that's for you to research and decide, but you're probably more likely to treat it carefully during the move than the couriers delivering it to the store did.

Moonpucher when do you plan on moving to Austin the reason I ask is it might be in best intentions to wait i've seen so many cases of people moving here and their TV broke while coming LED, LCD or Plasma. If you want when you get down here I can help you out I work for Magnolia.

I've moved a Plasma TV before with no problems. I'd personally put it in my vehicle with me. Let the movers haul the furniture and crap you don't care about.

That being said, I'd probably wait if it is truly 2-4 months. Things only get better and cheaper over time. OR . . . $2700 would buy a helluva nice projector.

I don't think you will have any problems trying to move it if you want it now. That said, I don't think prices are at their lowest yet.
