Hey guys,

So I purchased a sammy hlp-5085w (the pedastel one) about a year and half ago.

I also got a three year bulp replacement warranty at the time.

I haven't really noticed any loss of brightness in the picture (but that could just be because it was gradual over time and I dont remember how bright it used to be.)

My question is, should I just change the bulb and take advantage of my warranty? I'm allowed three changes in the three year warranty.

Does the picture on dlp's get dimmer over time?

Should I just leave well enough alone or should I change the bulb?

I wish I could test how well the picture looks, but I guess I would need the same tv brand new side by side for a comparison.

Any advice would be welcomed.

thanks

No warranty will replace a bulb that works perfectly! You're entitled to a replacement when it fails, not at your whim. I'm still on my 1st bulb, and my Samsung DLP is 3 1/2 years old. If you want to obsess about it, get yourself a calibration DVD such as AVIA or DVE and check whether the contrast or brightness settings are changing over time. My impression is that the bulb works pretty well until close to the end of its life.

In the service menu.

By the way, bulbs last on average about 6000 hours. You could have a great one now, that is going to last 10,000 hours. If you trade it for a new one, you could get one that, by chance, will only last 4000 hours, and could actually blow before the old one would have. Just some food for thought.

While on the subject, is there a reason why the bulb in my HL-P5063W seems to need replacing after just 2,150 hours? The set was purchased in April, 2005, and I'm beginning to have problems with the set turning back on. The three lights in the power button are flashing and, according to the owner's manual, this means the bulb may be going.

Again, the 6000 hour figure is an average. Half will last longer and half less. And a few will last
