I have the opportunity to pick up a Definitive Technology Trinity subwoofer for $1800 and I m wondering if anyone here has any experience with it or knows anything about it.

I have done as much research as I can on this sub, but no one, other that Craigsub, seems to have listened to it. The only reason I am really looking into it is because of his review...

I am not a "techy" guy so when he stated that it sounded the best during the WOTW scene and was awesome for music, I thought that was a great review... Measurements don't really make much sense to me, so I just want want is not only going to sound great but what is going to rock my living room. (24W X 16D X 10H and opens on the Left to the rest of the house)

Can anyone give me any help here?

For the $1800 you are looking at spending on the Trinity there are subs that can be had in a fairly close price range that will outperform the Trinity. Of course the first one to come to mind is the SVS PB13-Ultra which is ranked very high on the CraigSub listing above the trinity -- if you want gobs of output there are the large vented dual driver offering from Elemental Deisgns like the A7-700 which is 1,800 -- and as someone mentioned the highly regarded Seaton Submersive is an excellent choice as well -- I think all of these have there advantages and disadvantages when compared to one another. I would definitely look at the Seaton and SVS before you pull the trigger...as they will offer you more performance...

I am hoping I can demo the Trinity in my home to see what all the hype is about. Like I said in my first post, the thing that intrigues me the most is that Craig stated that, even with all of the amazing subs he had auditioned, the Trinity just "sounded best" when he was watching movies. To me, that is a HUGE statement to the output of the sub. Granted, he did not have the Seaton sub at the time either...

I guess I am just looking for reinforcement or additional info by people who may have heard one...

Haven't heard one but given the $$$ being spent you should also consider the SVS PB13 Ultra and Mark Seaton's Submersive as additional considerations as others here have already stated. There is no doubt that all 3 of these subs will make you smile!!!!!

The Trinity has a smaller footprint, so if you don't have alot of room for the others the Trinity might be the way to go. I have 2 References which almost equal 1 Trinity in a 15x29x9 room and I'm satisfied with the bass I get. If you can audition one in your home use WOTW and The Haunting dts as your guide.

You will have a hard time getting someone on this forum to buy into a brick and mortar sub. I think you would be very satisfied and a PB13 would not significantly out perform it. You mentioned Craigsubs assessment. Are you after great sound or great graphs?

Well, if you READ his assessment, he states that is SOUNDED great! The graphs, on the other hand, did not look all that impressive for this sub.

When you get into this caliber of subs you getting into splitting hairs IMO. Never heard the Submersive or the SVS but have heard the Trinity. Sub was set up in a typical living room about your size and the Trinity was a beast. If your preference is that home theater shake rattle and roll it will be there in abundance. Music wise it did not sound that good to me IMO, Sub was crossed at 60hz for that reason in his UNTREATED room YMMV. Either of these subs should do it for you.

So True. The I.D. players have a lot of fans here (not to mention DIY). It never takes long for them to chime in. There are many fantastic subs being made today- lots of wonderful choices in all price ranges. The Trinity is a very capable sub that has earned some high praise.

The seller has two Trinitys. Might be able to get a deal if I buy both. My thoughts are:

1. Great subs proven to have tremendous output.

2. Good looking subs of reasonable size

3. As with all Definitive Technology products, excellent resale value when I decide to upgrade.

Am I missing anything?

The Trinity is an excellent subwoofer, I honestly cant see anyone being disappointed with its performance.

If you audition it, and like it, go for it, no matter what people might say, that beast is no slouch! Hell, it weighs 185lbs!! That would out a grin on my face

Edit: 2???!?! Your freakin' insane man! If you get both, I want to see some spl demo vids!

I just don't understand why the Trinity recieved fewer points both for HT and for music if it is so great? There seems to be a real disconnect between the points rating and some of the comments Craig has made. To me, one of the most telling comments is this:

"Listening results: The Trinity surprised a few listeners by being much musical than a dual active 14 and quad passive 14 drivered sub "should".

In other words, it exceeded their expectations given its complexity.

SQ is subjective but when you say "outperform" it doesn't look like that is the case

3a. SVS PB13-Ultra

Measured results ... 20 Hz: 108 dB ... 20-63 Hz average: 113.5 dB

6. Definitive Technology Trinity

Measured results ... 20 Hz: 109 dB ... 20-63 Hz average: 115.5 dB

I think that in this price range there are some GREAT contenders:

HSU Dual Drive

Seaton Submersive

Paradigm Sub 25

Various ED subs

SVS PB13U

Would be cool to be able to hear them all...

The Paradigm Sub 25 is nearly twice as much as all the others you listed. The Sub 15 might be close though...
