Hey guys, I have a quick question. I know the last year of Samsung DLP HL-S5086W is a fantastic TV. There is no debate about that. However, the newer HL-T5075S came out not too long ago and has not received too much press or reviews. They are exactly the same in price for me so that is not a consideration. This will be mostly used for Xbox 360 and movies. I know there is alot of calibration threads for the HL-S, but I dont know about the HL-T. Any opinions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!!

Well HL-S5087 is a 1080P tv, and was a great TV no doubt, the HLT5075 is a 720P TV. big difference, I would go for the 5087, but why not the HL-T5087? check the LED DLP owners thread, lots of good info there. HLT just were released about a month ago, so thats why theres not much calibration stuff yet.

If you definitly want a BULB DLP, then lookforward to the HL-T5076S. This is a direct continuation (the next gen) HLS5087W.

Hope this helps

Oh. Im sorry, I really didnt mean to quote the 1080p DLP from last year. Whatever the model number is for the 720p bulb hl-S50xx that is the one that I meant to compare to the HL-T5075s.....Sorry for the confusion. Any info for those two tvs?

EDIT--There, I edited the original post. It is the HL-S5086W, not the 87. It is the 86 that I am trying to compare to its newer hl-t5075s

There will be more owner information for the HL-Txx75 models as more AVS members buy them.

Why would you be interested in last years models if they were not significantly cheaper? There is no indication that the HL-T lamp based sets have PQ that isn't at least as good as the HL-S sets.

The only way to find out if the HL-T sets have any special issues would be to wait and watch for a few months.

Yeah I dont necessarily think that the newer hl-t are going to be any WORSE, but kinda like the hl-s are supposedly to be superb, i just hope samsung didnt mess anything up. And also I would love to have just someone telling me exactly what to change in OSD\\service menu to get best picture quality and I feel like that is available for the hl-s.

Bill I am looking closly at them. But I cannot justify the price. Xbox 360 games are all in 720p....so, in my logic which may be wrong, the 720p tv would be Xbox doing games in 720-->outputting in 720p over vga-->to a native 720p tv. which results in no scaling. However with a 1080p tv, you would have to scale...right? I am a little unsure about this, but it seems if I am just doing 720p games and all broadcasting is not in 1080p then I will never see the benefits...is that correct?

You probably wouldn't see a difference due to the resolution of 50" TV sets, but the 1080p sets do have other features that improve their picture quality over the 720p models. It's up to you as far as what's worth the money.

I'm happy with my 720p set for HDTV, SDTV and movies using a good SD upscaling DVD player. I'm sure that a 1080p TV would have better PQ, but I have no idea how much difference that would make for games. Upscaling from 720p to 1080p is probably hard to detect. Deinterlacing 1080i to 1080p should be very hard to detect.

As long as I don't install one of each side by side, the difference isn't enough to cause an upgrade fever for me.

Thats incorrect, alot of 360 games are going to be 1080p, and there are some right now also. But dont forget that 360 games that are 720p will sometimes upconvert to 1080p i believe.

xbox 360 is very capable of doing 1080p, just as the ps3 is. PS3 used 1080P as a huge marketing scheme so it seems many people think its something only PS3 can do, which is very very wrong.

Hope this helps.

Many people use a calibration disk like DVE. A few people get professional calibrations done. You should use any settings you find here as a starting point. The Eliab link below also has a link to his tutorial for using the DVE disk.
