I have had my PLV70 for 6 years and it has served me well. Recently it has developed a very large circular discoloration that has been been diagnosed as a faulty green filter, repair cost of about $250. I have some ambient light in my theatre and always enjoyed the high lumens of the PLV70.

I am looking at either repairing the PLV70 or buying one of the new 1080P projectors. Either the Sanyo PLV Z3000 or the Epson 6500UB. I have a 110" diagonal Stewart Greyhawk screeen. I can take advantage of the 1080P performance of a new projector with Blue Ray DVD's. Any upgrade advise?

Thanks so much in advance.

New pj for sure, Sony HW10, JVC, Panny 3000U and the Epson you mentioned are all great choices.

Just a question about how you turn your PLV-70 OFF. I had a similar problem developing in mine a few years ago. I discovered, with information from this forum, that if the projector is left in the standby mode, it still stays quite warm inside. When I started turning the power off completely the discolouration went away after a few days. You might want to look into that.

Buy a new projector...

Perhaps?

I am currently operating under the yellow light (bulb replacement time!) and am awaiting delivery of a new bulb. The current picture has dimmed but likely brighter than any 1080p option that is available that costs less than a small car!

From previous experience I know that the blaze of light that will errupt from the PLV70 will have me falling in love with the machine again.

Light is might!!!

Contrast is a myth created by projector manufacturers and consumers with small screens!!

Hi Al. I have always used the remote to turn off the projector. I will try to turn off the power completely to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks!

Hi Baird. Part of me is looking for an excuse to buy a new projector. I did a lot of research on this forum before buying my PLV70 and have enjoyed it a lot. If I repair the projector there is a chance it could develop another problem. I'm not sure how long this projector can last.

The new 1080P projectors can be purchased for half of what my PLV70 did 6 years ago and they can do so much more. I need to see a Sanyo PLV Z3000 or an Epson 6500/7500UB to see if the lower lumen output is worth the gain in black level/contrast ratio.

Thanks for your input! I will remember the advice of a fellow "light cannon" user like you.

Don't get me wrong, I too go though periods of getting itchy to upgrade to 1080P about every 6 months. How ever there are elements of the current setup I'm not prepared to compromise. I'd never move away from a 4 metre wide 2.35 audiotransparent low gain screen, for example. I know for lower light projectors there are other options but for me the drawbacks are too high.

I keep coming back to this forum hoping to see that someone like yourself has found the solution, but to date I have yet to be convinced. Its been a long wait!!

Meanwhile a hi def player transmitting 720p to the projector bathing the screen with glorious light aint all bad!

Well, I'm right there with all the other plv-70 stalwarts...still running strong. I'd love to move to 1080P, but if I can't watch football in the daytime, there's no point. I need all those lumens - just no way to get rid of the ambient light in my home without spending thousands on blackout shutters, which has an exceedingly low WAF.

This is a tough hobby, isn't it? We have all the technical limitations that we have to work though to find the right answers for our particular setup and if we don't get the WAF sorted right then its back to the drawing boards!!
