Have a DVP-NS75H which is connected to my Samsung S5053 720p set. Been quite satisfied with the PQ, but see a lot of new players out. Have my eye on upgrading to the Sony 700H, Pioneer DV-410V or try the Tosh XD-E500.

Is it worth upgrading my existing player? I sit about 12-14ft from the TV, not sure if I would be able to squeeze any more PQ out of my DVDs with my existing display.

THANKS

Is that supposed to be Pioneer or do they have the exact same models? If Pioneer, I know that is a very nice budget player, I've seen one on my Sammy 5053 also. You need to spend quite a bit more money to notice much more of a difference, IMO.

Really though, IMO if your going to upgrade, get it right. Spend some money for a top of the line player. The Oppo 983, perhaps a Bluray player with Reon/QDEO or the Pioneer 51 Bluray player even edges out Reon on HQV deinterlacing tests. I wouldn't waste money of a lateral move or a slight upgrade.

Good points on both of your comments. Yes, was referring to the Pioneer model - typo. I purchased a Blu-Ray player but couldn't justify the price of it and the blu ray discs as I didn't see a HUGE difference in PQ, not enough to make me want to keep the player and spend $20+ on each disc.

I thought the viewing distance would negate any slight improvement with an upgraded player. I may still try the XDE500 or the Pioneer DV-410V - could always return 'em and they're under $100/ea.

wow, yeah. If you didn't see enough improvement on Bluray to justify it, I'd be surprised if any upconverting player would be a significant improvement, especially at that vewing distance. What Bluray player was it? Did you try any SD DVD's on the Blu player? If so, how did it compare to what you have now? We have the same displays and I've used everything from an old 480p player to HD/Blu players, to the Oppo 983. There is really only minor differences from the average players and the best players on our displays, especially at those distances. I loved the Oppo, but it was a minor difference if you didn't know what to look for.

Don't get me wrong, I did see a difference between Blu and standard DVDs, just not enough of a difference for me to keep the player and keep investing in Blu Rays. I had a Samsung BD-P1500, and it seemed to upconvert on par with the NS75H upconverter I have now. I still like my plasma, been great for the past 2.5 years I have had it. Don't really want to plunk down $2,000 for a 52" 1080p set..... yet. Maybe a year or so. I figured if one of the newer players I listed above gave any additional improvement it might be worth it, but it might just be a waste of money.

What DVD player do you have your S5053 connected to?

lol, I have had Toshiba XA1, A2, A35 HD DVD players, Onkyo HD805 HD DVD player (Reon), Pioneer 51 Bluray player Pioneer 410, and Oppo 983.

They all looked "good" on this set. I found 720p output was cleaner than 1080i and I didn't notice any lack of detail with 720p. I use 720p for SD content and 1080i for HD/Bluray content. I see no need to upgrade until this display dies, it does have a really nice picture for what it is.
