Should I upgrade my receiver?

461 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  jason978
Hey gang,

I have been thinking of upgrading my receiver but I don't know if it's worth it. I have a 4 year old pioneer vxs409, only cost around $250 new back then. Up front I have cambridge soundworks speakers newton mc200's and mc300. I don't know if those speakers would benefit from a new receiver. How much impact does a receiver have? as much as the speakers? One of my problems is I don't know if my receiver or speakers are really that good. They are the only ones I have ever owned and none of my friends or family have any 5.1 set ups. So, I have no basis for comparison. Thanks,

Jason

I am not familiar with your speakers but IMO, the receiver and the speakers are the two that really influence the sound. I suggest audition the Pioneer 1014, they are selling cheap now and I will bet that it will sound much better than your current Pioneer. Take it home, try it out with your current speaker and see if it improves the sound. If it does and you are contented with it, then you can wait while saving for a good speaker. Then when you have the cash, take a look at Polk LSi7 (U$400/pair and even less when used) which are already going very cheap but highly regarded by reviewers and owners.

What is your budget for speakers and receiver if you decide to buy?

I would suggest going to some nicer Hifi stores, and check out the higherend stuff. And see if you hear a difference, and then figure out the budget, of how much you want to spend.

Just my 2cents, BK
just looking at new receivers right now. Just trying to get the best my current ones can do. I think I could swing the $400 for the pioneer 1014.
