Have you verified an actual short or is it just keeping the phone off hook.

If the latter, shut the unit off, wait for the disk to spin down, and then disconnect the AC power for 10 minutes. If you have the problem where the modem chip gets confused, that will fix it.

I just had the same problem with a Showstopper this morning. When I woke up I saw the light flashing "ext in use"on kitchen phone. After seeing all the phones were hung up I suspected the SS.


Did the 10 minute unplug and then rebooted.

The 10 minute reset seems to have solved the off-hook problem for the phone line. Much nicer solution than ~$125 for new motherboard---although it's great to know about that, just in case.
