My Panasonic Showstopper 2000 is hung up in the boot process...seems to be and endless loop. Sonic Blue's tech support said I would have to send it in for a costly repair. Any ideas on putting another hard drive in the unit? I'm not technically oriented when it comes to HD DVRs. Any advise would be appreciated that would allow me to salvage the unit.

This is a common problem. Sometimes the hard drive fails but most of the time the operating system (disk image) gets corrupted. It is the same repair process whether you use a new or the old drive. Occasionally the problem is within the motherboard but fortunately that's rare. You can download a new disk image from either of the two FTP in my signature block and you can preview the installation instructions using the link below.
