I know this has been covered. I have been doing searches for the last 3-4 days trying to find an answer. I am trying to take a show off the SS HD and burn it to a DVD. I have downloaded extract_rtv (vlc-0.7.2-replaytv.zip). I put the HD in my XP box and it dosen't see it. Am I not using the correct version? I just need a link to a thread or a good search term. I know you guys are tired of answering questions like these, I tried don't kill me!

Have you try launching extract_rtv to see the files. You pc will not read the file, you will need to use exttract_rtv to view the files.

Also, make sure that your computer does detect the drive at boot up.

The computer sees it in BIOS, coming up as Secondary Master: Quantum Fireball lct15 3. The program I downloaded has a "vlc.exe" and it opens the VLC media player. From there I did a open file and then tried to browse but the drive isn't there to browse?

You downloaded Video Lan Client (vlc), which plays mpegs/DVDs -- not extract_rtv.

Go here for the right application:

You should simply search for "extract_rtv" to see MANY posts about the utility and how to use it.

Note: you will likely not be able to play Showstopper mpegs with your DVD player unless you re-encode them with something like NeroVision, Sonic MyDVD, Ulead Movie Factory or TMPGEnc. Not all of these programs will even recognize the files as valid mpegs. YMMV.

The mpeg's video isn't the problem on the 3k boxes it's the audio.

big pants if you need to learn more search for "32KHz" or "32K" if you can search on 3 characters. That's the sample rate of the 3k line and it will tell you all you need to know about converting the audio to 48KHz for DVD authoring.

Once you have the audio in 48KHz sample rate. While at it try to convert the audio to DD format, mpeg-1 layer II works on some DVD players but not all and DD will work on ALL dvd players. DD is one of the two mandatory audio formats that must be supported the other being PCM.

Yeah, Jeff, I remember you wrote about this before...

I figured re-encoding the whole thing would avoid the sync problems, but until the audio is in a compatible format the authoring apps don't help.

BP, in case you don't know, DD=Dolby Digital (aka AC3), and PCM is WAV audio.

Good luck.

[P.S. I DON'T recommend Nero as an encoder, but a lot of people have it.]

I use Sonic Foundry's AC3 encoder does a great job. You need to demux the audio and video streams. Convert the audio stream to AC3 either in one step or to PCM (WAV) and then to AC3.

BeSweet does the conversion as one process, but sound forge needs the two steps. Besweet is free, but I thought I may have had issues with it doing the work. I know that the AC3 encoder with sound forge and the one by sonic that's part of the scenarist package both do good jobs.

And FWIW.... WAV is PCM not PCM is WAV. PCM is the format and WAV is a file format that uses PCM, not the other way around. =)
