Well now for the first time the same HD progamming is showing on Showtime HD via Directv and Dish's Showtime HD. Can anyone comment that has BOTH Directv Showtime HD and Dish Showtime HD and the picure quality differences on the same movie? I continually read about compression and how many feel Dish has a better picture on the same standard definiton channels than Directv. Is this true for HD?

How does Directv HD compare to Dish HD?

Is is possible for one company to provide better picture quality of HD over the other and why?

I'd say it's a push. They both dedicate full transponders for rebroadcast of the incoming signal. About the only difference I see is something that can be said of any 2 channels (aside from varying compression levels on SD channels in general) is that the 2 different receivers that I use have different default settings on their black levels. Which naturally makes the picture look somewhat different on the same channel if both receivers are sharing the same input on the display.

I agree wholeheartedly with DP1. I can tell very little difference except the difference between the equipment which is, IMHO, negligible in the scheme of things.

Actually, I believe it's the opposite. In fact, I know that DirecTV has lessened it's compression on all SD channels as a result of the benefits of spot beam back in January. I've had this confirmed by the very person who manages the compression level at DirecTV. As for DN, I do believe that they are still under the crunch of locals cram until their other spot beam in implemented later this summer. I do have both HBO HD's on DTV and E*. They are the same PQ.

With respect to HDTV channels, yes, what Dan said. There should be very little difference. I don't have a 110 sat C working right now but I know this is true for 119 HD channels, I'm sure it is for the Showtime HD channel as well.

PS- LM welcome back. I've missed ya around here. We signed some TV show contracts in your backyard, finally. So I may get up your way to visit soon. Other than that, work's been slow. Hope things been better with you.
