Side Heights (SVS elevations) -is this proper spacing (pics)?

768 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Dustin Windsor
This project seems to be never ending and we've been living in cables and speaker wire, which thankfully is almost time to cover up!

I had 4 SVS elevations in my ceiling and my gosh they looked bad hanging down. They're off the ceiling forever (ahhh more holes to cover!).

-I moved two of them to front heights and two of them to the side for side heights.

-can anyone comment on the placement of the side heights (i know my front heights are good as they're lined up with my front towers).

-Should the side heights be slightly in front of the surrounds the way i have them, or should i line them up with the surrounds -or it doesn't really matter since they're so close as is?

-Is it enough spacing between the surrounds and heights? I can lower the surrounds even more if have too. I do have a very high couch back which blocks the speakers if i lower them more mind you. Currently the surround tweeters are about 1 foot above my ears.

Any tips would be great!

Should i be setting these in my AVR as "front height and Top middle" (something tells me i remember reading i should.
Or set them as "front height + surround height"?
-In my AVR the rear heights do not have any sound when playing Atmos -set as "Front Heights + Surround Heights".

The rear heights turn on if playing aura 3d and Dolby True HD + Neural X, but not Atmos.
I have both pairs of my elevations on the sides of my room since my front and rear wall are slanted. SVS told me to still run them as fronts and rears and not top / front rear or middle.
The OP has a 5.1.4 system and originally had the four speakers mounted on the ceiling in the recommended locations shown here:

Due to decor and aesthetic considerations - he was forced to move the four speakers to the walls - but kept them at ceiling height.

The top rear speakers moved to the side walls - but are still in the same plane and are still at ceiling height.

The top front speakers moved to the front wall - but are still at ceiling height and still fall within the recommended 30 degree window shown in the side view of the above link.

IMO the top front and top rear speakers did not suddenly become 'front height' and 'rear height' speakers in the conventional sense - simply because they were moved slightly from the original locations on the ceiling.

The OP wanted to continue using these fours speakers as Atmos top front and top rear - he was just forced to move them to the walls but kept them as close as possible to the original locations. As such I recommended to leave them classified as top front and top rear - because that is exactly how he wants to use them.

Naturally I recommended that he re-run Audyssey because the frequency response of the speakers will change somewhat in the new locations.

He could also re-classify them as 'front height' and 'rear height' and then re-run Audyssey. If he did that - I would be interested to see his subjective impressions of both set-ups and which he prefers better. Because the speakers are in the same location regardless - only the set-up classification will change.

Can you move the base layer surrounds back a bit from the mlp? More at a a 45 degree angle (if 90 would be directly behind you). Get them out of the same plane as the height speakers to create better separation.

I thought i read they should be on the same plane....
If i move them back, than the couch backs will block them unless i raise the surrounds - i know i need to keep separation between the surrounds and the heights.
