Think about it, my next project will be making my CRT dead silent.

How would this be possible ( yes it has to be turned on and working).

Everytime I listen to movie tracks without my CRT I am overwhelmed with all the nuances I am missing out.

Help point me into the right direction pls.

Also wasn't the DWINs suppose to be silent?

Thanks

Buid a hush box. It is the best way.

We built one for one of our customers XG's (which have a lot of fan noise) out of 1/2" birch plywood, and lines the inside with some thin moving blanket, about 2" clearance on the sides and 1" on the bottom. It was amazingly quiet directly under and behind the PJ. The only thing you could still hear and it was from in front of the PJ was a little noise from the PS fans.

Ppoint is the hush box was light, strong and quiet so you don't have to use dense heavy materials like MDF to accomplish the task.

Yes -- I've been remiss in posting about this -- the hushbox Terry's talking about is the one he recently built for me. It's awesome -- I don't know how I lived with the XG for so long before this.

I don't think one can ever make a pj "dead silent," but you can sure come close enough to be very happy with it. And what little fan noise I can hear now (including the additional little noise of the clever, thermostatically-controlled ventilation fan Terry rigged up) is of a nice, non-annoying pitch.

Now all I have to do is paint the hushbox to match my ceiling & have someone bury all the cable in the ceiling.

Terry did a fantastic job with my whole installation & calibration. But I'm gonna have to buy a larger coffeepot for his next visit ;)

Terry or whoever, how much airflow room does a hushbox need inside?

I finally hoisted my XG this afternoon, and a hushbox is high on the list of projects once I actually get the thing working. Would 1" from the inside sound-absorbers on the "top" (which is now on the bottom since it's upside-down) and sides be enough, if I have an exhaust fan to pull air out?

I have about 4" between the base of the pj and the ceiling, and I think most of the heat comes out of the base. I plan to build the box to be open in the front, and seal it as tightly as possible to the ceiling. (I'm going to hang it from the unistrut mount, so it won't be built into the ceiling and airtight.) I've got a vent hose for an exhaust fan. If I put that at the back of the hushbox, would that draw enough cool air around the base (coming in around the ceiling) and front to keep things cool?

I'd like to have as little excess room around the pj as possible, especially under the "top." I'm 6'4" and the ceiling is 7'10". Right now I have just about 2" clearance between my head and the PJ. It would be Real Nice if I didn't have to duck under the hushbox...
