My Take:

From the offbeat mind of Mike Judge (Office Space, Beavis and Butt-head) comes this new HBO half-hour comedy that takes viewers inside the world of tech
start-ups - and the socially awkward underdogs who try to navigate its lucrative potential. Starring a talented ensemble of young comic actors and veterans, Silicon Valley charts the rising fortunes of Richard, an introverted computer programmer who lives in a "Hacker Hostel" start-up incubator along with his friends Big Head, Gilfoyle, and Dinesh. These social misfits live under the watch of Erlich, a dotcom millionaire who lets them stay in his house for free - as long as he gets a 10% stake in their projects. Stuck working part-time at a large tech company called Hooli, Richard's obscure website, Pied Piper, is going nowhere fast. But when a mid-level Hooli executive named Jared is apprised of the value of the site's novel compression algorithm, Richard finds himself caught in the middle of an extreme bidding war between Hooli founder Gavin Belson and independent billionaire venture capitalist Peter Gregory.

Partially inspired by co-creator Mike Judge's experiences as a Silicon Valley engineer in the 1980s, this quirky and at times laugh out loud comedy follows the misadventures of an introverted computer/programmer nebbish his equally awkward and or brainy friends their attempts to make their fortune in the highly competitive and potentially lucrative high-tech gold rush.

The humor and situational gags have a contemporary flavor that is enhanced by the rather eclectic cast ensemble. The writing is quite good and revolves around the giggle inducing interaction among the principles as they contend with the eye opening day to day struggles of living together in a Bay Area startup incubator, while trying to manage their new “company”, personality clashes, a rather eccentric benefactor and the pressure of getting their product out before the competition. It all gets rather silly, but in a good way, remaining relevant and light. My daughter is a fan and had positive things to say after seeing season one on HBO. I watched all eight season one episodes with my wife and we got a kick out of it.

Season one of Silicon Valley on Blu-ray is spread over two BD-50 Blu-ray Discs and comes housed in a standard sized amaray keep case with accompanying slipcover.

Silicon Valley: The complete first seasoncomes to Blu-ray Disc from HBO Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 30 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.2 Mbps.

This video
presentation is reminiscent of the show’s broadcast high definition quality and looks terrific on Blu-ray . Colors are vivid with rich primary highlights and natural rendering that looks superb. Skin tones are characteristically distinguishable with lifelike complexional structure. Resolution is excellent as images have crisp definition, revealing subtle delineation, and above average dimension. Blacks are strong and depth of field in low level shots is appreciable. Sharpness fluctuates here and there but fidelity is never in question. This is a faithful and pristinely rendered high definition presentation that won’t disappoint

The multi-channel lossless audio won’t test the limits of your surround sound system but it capably delivers the elements present in the show’s soundtrack. Dialogue is tonally rich with excellent room penetration and defining clarity. Dynamics are punchy and bass response is appropriate in support of the track’s recorded elements. The front channels handle the bulk of the audio and presents an open two dimensional soundstage with the surrounds supplying ambient detail. I think the mix mates perfectly with the source material and sounds great.

Bonus Features:

Final Thoughts:

Silicon Valley is a quirky, relevant and fun TV comedy that strikes the right chords when viewed in the context of today’s high-tech world. It comes to Blu-ray from HBO Entertainment featuring gratifying high definition audio/video mated with a fair assortment of supplements that are worth checking out if you enjoy the show. Give Silicon Valley: The complete first season a rent on Blu-ray and check it out before season two airs on HBO in April 2015.
