The acoustics of my room are horrible and my sub's placement options are very limited. What is the preferable method for increasing bass output: turning up the volume dial on the sub (h100 at currently at 3.5) or increasing bass output on the receiver (xr55 currently set at 5) ?

Same thing. It will get louder but not necessarily better.
