Silver Ticket Screen Material / Color - What to choose?

I just moved into a new place and it is a perfect time to upgrade. I could really use some input on screen selection – well specifically the material / color. Here is the setup:

  • Epson 5050ub
  • Want to go with a 120” screen
  • Will be seated 9’ – 10’ away from screen
  • In a living room with 'ok' light control: moderate ambient light in the evening even with curtains / blinds
  • Blackout conditions at night
  • Pretty much sold on Silver Ticket to fit my budget

There will be two use cases:

  1. General family / evening use. This is where there will be a decent amount of ambient light, however the projector will be zoomed to fill a 90” area. Kids and wife appreciate good picture quality, but not extremely picky and the content will be streaming services such as Disney+ and Netflix
  2. My use. Night-time / near blackout. Image quality and color fidelity is very important and a lot of my content has dark scenes. Will be using all 120” of the screen. Input will be UHD sources, mostly Blu-ray.

I am not sure if I should go with something that increases gain: would the benefit in the evenings outweigh the downsides at night? Since we will be sitting fairly close should I just rule out silver as the reflections will be distracting?

Thank you for your help!

A few unanswered questions would help. Since this is a living room I assume the ceiling is white and most likely the walls are also a light reflective color. Even if you completely control ambient light the light from the projector will light up the room washing out the image. How far from the screen are any white/light colored surfaces? Most likely you need at least a gray screen if not one with ALR properties if reflective surfaces are close to the screen.

So the wall that the screen will be mounted two is a dark red / orange. The other walls are white, but not in close proximity to the screen (the room is pretty large).

I also have the option of painting the walls as we aren't fond of leaving everything white. The thought is to leave the back wall dark orange and the others a neutral grey. Yes - the ceiling is white.

A gray will help with the walls. How high is the ceiling as that's what will give you the most reflection? Can you treat the ceiling 3' to 6' out from the screen with a dark fabric? 120" for the Epson will be easy to light so a gray .8 gain screen might be enough but if the white ceiling is close to the top of the screen only an ALR screen will help with the other artifacts that go along with it.

Ok... so the screen will be about two feet from the ceiling. I also just purchased two cans of the following in light grey to paint the walls:

Interesting as I never heard of the product. Would defiantly like to know if it really works, keep us up to speed.

Get the sample pack from Silver Ticket and see how you like each. Their grey material has a spec'd 1.0 gain which the only way you do that with a grey screen is by adding stuff to increase reflectance. This will result in some negative artifacts like shimmer and sparkle. The same is true with ALR screens. I haven't seen one, even from Stewart, that doesn't add some amount of shimmer. Some materials are really, really bad. The shimmer on the Carl's FlexiGray sample I have is horrible. I really like to recommend a grey screen but I am having a hard time actually finding a cost-effective option that performs well. The most cost-effective grey screen is a painted wall. Can you get your wall smooth and paint it grey?

So I am quite handy. I can replace a wall and work magic with an orbital sander, however you are kind of confirming what I was sort of leaning towards: get a high quality white screen and work on the room some more.

So far I have ordered the Wall/Ceiling Ambient Light Rejecting paint for the side and back walls. I am going to paint the front wall with this: Rust-Oleum 285144 Ultra Matte Interior Chalked Paint 30 oz, Charcoal, 30 Fl Oz - - Amazon.com

I want to leave the ceiling mostly white, but going to fade the Rust-Oleum into white about 18" in front of the screen and do a better job of light blocking on the windows.

Luckily the wife is actually liking the grey / charcoal scheme.

Am I heading in the right direction?
