I'm considering the Sim2 300E, but based on my experience with the Domino 30H I'm hesitant.

Apparently, I'm in the minority regarding the Sim2 reds. On the 30H I have, I felt they were blown out and very oversaturated. Yellows were also way off; very green. A quick round of Progressive Labs to flatten out the greyscale proved my suspicions correct. I got the greyscale looking good, but the primaries and secondaries weren't very accurate. Perhaps this machine was miscalibrated from the factory and not representative of the renowned "Sim2 reds".

Unfortunately, the 30H offers zero control in the user menus for color decoding. Only RGB bias and gains can be adjusted, so back it goes.

Perhaps I'm spoiled by the 12K I had a while back, since it had a very sophisticated user menu that allowed complete control of the color decoder. I could tune it to a nearly perfect SMPTE-C response.

For those of you who have the 300E, do the Live Colors Management controls permit adjustment of the color decoder, or is it merely a fancy greyscale tool? It seems like the only thing it does is let you move the white point on the CIE chart, and wherever the primaries and secondaries fall after that aren't up for further adjustment.

Hi Thirdkind,

Please bear in mind that I am a big fan of the Sim2 reds. However, the 300e does have the new color mamgement software on board and SIM2 have gone to great trouble to produce accurate grey scale tracking out of box. The new comprehensive adjustments will also allow you to balance the colors to your taste. Overall, this is the brightest and darkest projector of the SIM2 single chip range and has one of the most natural and smooth images out there. But don't take my word, go and see for yourself. Good hunting.

Thanks Paul. Going by the 30H, I'm sure the Sim2 does produce a stunning image.

My concern lies not with the greyscale, which can be tweaked easily enough using bias/gain controls. I'm concerned about the color decoding--where exactly the primaries and secondaries fall within the CIE chart. My measurements of the 30H show green as dead on, blue as pretty close, and red as way, way oversaturated. Secondaries were off by a bit, but not too far. I'm not a fan of this "look". I'd much rather see everything as close to reference as possible.

What I need to know is if the color management controls allow individual adjustment of the primaries and secondaries, or if they're really just a fancy way of adjusting greyscale. The Sim2 manual does a poor job of describing the exact function of the LCM.

Hi Thirdkind,

I believe RTFM mentioned that the SIM2 HT 300e does have ability to adjust the primary colors. The funny thing is, I over at Jeff's the other day and did a quick colorfacts grey scale measure and I also looked at the primaries. They were not exact but very very close to the RGB points in the color space. I have measured a number of SIM2 single chippers and they all seem pretty good on this measure compared to other pj's including the Marantz which I feel is SIM2's closest competitor. Hope this helps.

I think I know what you are asking....???? Yes each color can be adjusted in the service menu. I had my 300 E Link Isf'd and I sat through the whole thing and I remember the installers adjusting the colors in a few differant service menus seperatly to acheive the correct gray scale.
