I'm making the upgrade to 7.1 (from 5.1) soon and I have a little, probably "duh!" question:

Are the back rears still the "primary" rear speakers in the soundfield in a 7-channel configuration like they are in 5.1? Or does the audio information that was going to the back rears now go to the surrounds instead? Or are the surrounds new "tacked on" 6th and 7th channels that carry a "lesser" load than the back rears?

Thanks for bearing with me in my stupidity.

The rear speakers have never been the primary surrounds in a 5.1 set-up. When going from 5.1 to 7.1, a second pair of surrounds is added behind you, not at your sides. The idea being that any surround information which would have normally phantom imaged behind you, can be extracted from the surround channels and send to speakers behind you.

I think your confusion is shown by this statement. There are no "back rears" in a 5.1 system. They're meant to be more to your sides.

No, it's not wrong. The speakers at the sides of the listening area are for 5.1, the ones behind the listening area expand it to 7.1 playback.

See attached diagrams of typical 5.1 and 7.1 layouts. Notice the speaker locations.
