I'm setting up a "music on hold" PC. I've got a collection of MP3s loaded but I need a player. All it needs to do is play the entire collection in a shuffle/repeat loop. It'll be starting automatically on system startup.

This PC will not have internet access once it's installed.

Anyone have any ideas? I've tried MediaPlayer and it's very close except that when it starts a upgrade window sometimes pops up and you have to click through it. Not a problem for a desktop but that's a killer for an unattended PC.

If anyone knows command line arguments for MPlayer or another player, I can write a batch script to meet my needs, i.e

play song

play song

etc.

run this batch script again.

This is on a Win98SE box. Thanks for any help.

Our software, Media Jukebox, can do this.

www.mediajukebox.com

I suggest the Version 8 beta available on the download page. It's called beta still, but it is more stable than 7.2.

There is a playback option that allows you to tell it to start playing on startup. Whatever you were playing when you quit will play when you reboot.

This version is also a lot better for use in HTPC's. Full screen mode with controls, support for remotes, etc.

Why don't you just use Winamp? With the MAD decoder plug-in, it's the second best mp3 player out there (it'd be the best if the newer versions didn't have so many damn bugs and all that extra crap that slows down CPU performance).

The best player out there is CoolPlayer. It has the MAD decoder built in, but it has troubles with the SB Live series. However, if you don't use anything by Creative, I'd say go with CoolPlayer.

I tried winamp but couldn't figure out how to get it to play automatically on startup. I'll take a look at CoolPlayer.

I made an error on my first post. I meant MediaJukebox not MediaPlayer. I've been using a free version. If I purchase it will that suppress the occasional startup upgrade prompt?

Yes, but you might have to turn off "check for updates" in the options.

Version 8 may work better for you.

Hope you're getting along OK with MJ otherwise.

To get winamp to play on startup, just stick a playlist (.m3u) in your startup directory. Windows will automatically lauch winamp and winamp will start to play with the last settings you used.
