My home theater will include the following:
  • Emotiva XPA-3 amplifier (front L&R, center). Balanced and unbalanced inputs.
  • Emotiva UPA-7 amplifier (L&R surrounds, L&R rear surrounds). Unbalanced inputs.
  • Onkyo PR-SC886 preamplifier. Balanced and unbalanced outputs.

Because the UPA-7 has only unbalanced inputs, I will have to use the preamp's unbalanced outputs for the four surround signals.

But what about the XPA-3? Can I use balanced (XLR) cables between the preamp and XPA-3? Is there any advantage to doing this? Or should I stick with unbalanced cables, since I'm using unbalanced cables w/ the UPA-7?

Should work either way. I'd probably just stick with unbalanced to all unless you have long runs of cable.
