Simple question -- I hope.

Simple question yet I dont know haha. I've read not to leave 4:3 images on your new plasma for too long because of the balck bars on the sides. What about DVDs that usually come in widescreen? It seems like everyone I get is widescreen, will the bars on the top and bottom hurt it the same as 4:3 ones will?

I also read that your game time should only be 10% of totall viewing within the first 900 hours. I dont think I can limit myself that much, should I just not bother with plasma?

You should bother a little with reading the forum.
You might get some IR with the black bars no matter where they are BUT it goes right away with some full screen viewing.

I used my PS3 the first day never a problem but some games are worse then others (Madden seems to be the worst) use some common since and you be fine.
The basic rule is to not use your plasma for more than 15-20 minutes a day. If you do you run the risk of it being enjoyed.

New plasma = CRT. If you did it on a CRT, you can do it on a plasma worry free.

I'm not 100% sure I know what a CRT is, I see it mentioned but only in that way.

I've been reading multiple threads that are alittle older and some of them make it sound like plasma is nothing but a bother and worrisome experince. I've also asked these questions in those threads without any response so I decided to start my own.

Thanks again to those who actually didnt waste bandwith and were helpful.
CRTs are tube TVs like we all grew up with. Flood222 maybe overexagerating it a little but so is anyone that says PDPs are a bother and worrisome.
CRT = cathode ray tube, the big picture tubes that power old tube TV's and computer monitors that have a giant bulge in the back.

Don't sweat the burn-in stuff, it's way overblown. Chances are you will occasionally see some brief image retention after watching a lot of 4:3 cable or a letterboxed movie, but it will go away within minutes. My wife will watch Home&Garden TV in 4:3 for hours while I'm not home, and when I first turn the TV on I can see a faint image of the bars on the sides, but it's always gone within a few minutes of normal full-screen viewing.
Thanks guys. I figured some of this plasma stuff was a bit overblown I just wanted alittle piece of mind before I go investing that much money into somthing.

I want to enjoy it which means I want to watch sports, SD, HD, ESPN, movies and play games but I dont want to have a panic attack everytime I do it. I'm going to be picking up my Samsung 4254 tomorrow, hopefully.

Thanks again.

You probably didn’t get any replies because you’re asking a burn-in question, and that topic has been beaten to death over and over and over. There are entire threads dedicated to the topic. I’m not sure what else can be said about the topic, really.

Edit: That Samsung has had its share of IR problems so there’s a decent chance you will drive yourself nuts worrying if you already are concerned.

I’m going to be doing xyz, will I get burn in?

Reply 1: Yes, definitely.

Reply 2: No way that’s a thing of the past.

Reply 3: Reply 1 above is wrong, and foolish.

Reply 4: Reply 2 above is wrong, and foolish.

Repeat until a mod kills the thread.

I got plenty of helpful replys and the reason I made this thread was already stated by me. I asked these specific questions and got no answers so I decided to ask in a thread.

I dont see anything wrong with not looking through pages and pages of nonsense, it didnt hurt anyone.

The part about the Samsung and it's IR really sucks though, that seemed to be the best TV I could get with my $1000 budget.

The Sammy is fine I am sure you will love it.

Read the thread for the TV (but not too much as it WILL drive you nuts) the TV has some very nice pixel sifting settings and different "wash" screens to help with any IR you might get.

Ah - you've been spending too much time on the Samsung threads! Seriously - I think you're worrying way too much. I just got a Panasonic plasma, been watching all sorts of different stuff on it for the 4 weeks I've had it, with black bars and grey bars at sides and top/bottom, hours of ESPN with the ticker across the bottom, and I've yet to see any kind of IR or any other problem. Plus, if a little IR creeps in, it scrubs out as soon as you display something else across that area anyway.

I would be a little leery of the xx/44/54/64 Samsungs though - I was looking at those and was scared off by the seemingly endemic "flicker" problem that a lot of people are having.

In defense of poster, these issues have been brought up ad nauseam.

We have found a fix for the flicker.

Also my 5064 has almost no IR
What is the fix? The 4254 model is the one I was supposed to get.

BTW, what 'flicker' problem?

The fix is a new Logic board.

Call Samsung and have a tech replace the logic board.

And all of them have this problem or just ones that were around launch?

Go to the Sammy thread and read the last few pages.
