OK. I am thinking about buying the 14 hour Tivo or 20 hour Replay.

If I buy an 80 gig drive, can I use a cloning software (ghost, drive image) and clone the old drive to the new drive, pop in the new drive, and be up and running?

Nope.. now you could use linux dd to clone either exactly and those will work (but @ the same size you'd be wasting your extra new space) There have been upgrade utilities developed for each system and it's quick and painless to add space... but you will need to study up a bit. Each have hack FAQ guides you should look over first.

With Replays/Showstoppers you have to use the RTV patch in NT, Win2K, or Linux to copy the drive. There are quirks to Replay's operating system that make it impossible to use traditional cloning methods like "ghost". I know that quite a few people on the forum have 80 gig and larger Replays.

Check the FAQ for more details.
