Simultaneous Optical and Analog

582 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Further
Hi,

I have the new intel mac mini and the Bose 3-2-1 sound system which, unfortunately, does not have a stereo out jack to run into the TV when I don't want the "big" sound.

Is there any way to get analog RCA AND optical digital out of the mac mini? I've thought of a Toslink splitter, but I can't seem to find a converter to convert the Toslink to RCA analog. I guess I could get a USB optical sound card, but then I would have to go in and switch the audio out to the different source every time I wanted to change.

I figured if there was ANY place on earth where someone could help me, it would be here. I would be grateful for any suggestions / guidance / links.

Thanks!

And for you too, zim2dive: I mentioned this in the other thread, but was mistaken on one point, now I know how both of you can solve your issues. Airport Express.

The Airport Express can be connected to your Mac either wirelessly or via ethernet. It has the same optical/analog audio connector that the Mac Mini has. Therefore, you can use the optical digital audio output on the Mini to connect to the device that requires it and the analog output to the other device via the Airport Express!

You now have both analog and digital output from the Mini without soldering, without programming problems. I suppose, if it made more sense, you could also reverse the setup: analog out from the Mini and digital out from the Airport Express.

But, the airport express can only play music from iTunes, right? I know there are things like AirFoil, but then there is a sound delay. Or, am I missing something?

I don't have one myself, but from what I have read, the latency issues are for films (DVDs) -- the picture and sound don't always sync. I have no idea whether that has an impact on your application, but what I find best about this solution is that when you upgrade in the future, the Airport Express should still be useful, even if not used for the same application.
