Single black bar at bottom of screen with Blu-ray player

775 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  nhdude

Hello all... total newbie here so please forgive my lack of knowledge.  Just moved up to HD with an LG 50PN6500 a week ago and so far I really like it.  However, I got a Blu-ray player today and, even with zoom for aspect setting, I get a single black bar only at the bottom of the screen.  Have tried both standard 16:9 setting on the Blu-ray as well as the full screen 16:9 setting with the same results.  Previously, I was using an old dvd player that I set for 16:9 full screen and had no letterboxing at all.  Then tried another blu-ray player with the same result.  If anyone could shed some light on this, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

You need to check the settings in the TV.

Widescreen movies are designed to be even wider than 16:9. Normally this results in black bars at both top and bottom of the screen. Your description suggests that the TV might be designed to detect those black bars and move the image to the top of the screen.

Thanks for your suggestion!  The black bar at bottom only appears when I use the "zoom" setting on the TV.  If I use standard 16:9, I get the bars top and bottom.  What is interesting is that movies streamed from Netflix using the zoom setting have no bars at all.  I'm going to try the Blu-Ray on another TV in a couple of days to see if this is unique to my TV.  Thanks again.  BTW, the bar isn't that big a deal but I'm trying to avoid letterboxed material until I have 100 hours on the set and I have a long way to go!
My guess is that it's a "feature" of the TV's zoom function. You might check to see if other zoom functions are available.

Another alternative would be to not watch movies for a while, and limit yourself to 16:9 TV programs.

Well, I used the zoom setting previously with the old dvd player and got full screen.  When I switched to blu-ray player in zoom mode, I get the single bar at the bottom.  Now, switched back to old player and, yep, single black bar at the bottom.  So, something seems to have changed with the zoom setting.  Got in touch with LG chatline but they said it's not the TV.  So, yes, will probably stay away from movies for a while and also run slideshow on the tv to burn it in.  Thanks again.

How can they tell over a chat line? What they are saying is there's no way there could be any kind of fault with the TV. Maybe you need to take your DVD and BD over to a friend and see how they perform over there and vice versa.

Yes, great idea... I'm going to try the player on another TV to see how it functions.  Of course, it won't be the same model TV so the zoom mode may be different.  Thanks!  And, yeah, I think standard response is that it can't be the TV.  Told me that if it fills the screen when watching TV then it's not the TV.  Duh :)
What settings do you have now in this blu-ray player for such? What player do you have?

Never mind, missed the part about using the old player and getting the same thing (unless the remote happens to trigger such in the players).

Another thought, have you tried resetting the tv (at least unplugging it for a while or running the specific resets available in the manual)?

Yes, same thing with both players.  Blu-ray is a Samsung BD-F5700.  I also tried the "full screen" mode for the player but that made no difference.  While chatting with LG, I did a hard reset on the TV with no change.  Thanks.
Is this only happening with one certain movie, or with all movies?

It's happening with all movies I've tried. According to LG manual, the zoom setting is supposed to fill the entire screen.  It fills the top but not the bottom.
Depending on where you got it, if you've had it for less than 30 days, you might be able to return it for a full refund. My current guess is that you have a defective unit and that another one would be OK.

Well, I've contacted LG via email and they asked me to do a reset to factory settings which I did and it did not help.  They also said it would probably need a service call if the reset didn't help.  It was purchased over the web and shipped to me so return could be problematic.  If they can come out and get it repaired, that would be easier I think.  We'll see what they offer next.  Thanks!
