sir-t165 to PC ? ?

2919 Views 30 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  RayL Jr.
Can't I just go Firewire from the SIR-T165 to a PC, if all I want to do is timeshifting???

Or should I go with a Hauppage or HiPix card?

I hope to be able to do something with a PC, but I can't seem to get one of these things to look at.

Rick,

My T165 just shipped from TvAuthority today (one of the

AVS sponsers). $577 with free shipping, but I ordered it

in early August.

As for the PC connection, any thoughts on how to get

around the lack of a Windows XP AV/C Tuner driver?

Ron,

I got one on order from Soundcity (got the $499 deal). I've been temped to jump and get it somewhere else, but everytime I want to, they seem to be out. Oh well. They seem to think I'll get mine in the next shipment.

As for the lack of a driver, I figured that I'd give creating one a shot. There is a very nice example driver (that doesn't really do anything) in the Windows XP DDK. I figure armed with that, the AV/C Tuner spec, my 1394 sniffer and some luck I should be able to come up with something. Heck, DVHSTool started because I was having trouble with DStream.

Who knows, they may even add a driver to DX9 before I get done.

Ron, Rick,

The 169Time is also just a tuner device, yet installing it as a "tape" device works just fine for sending/receiving transport streams to/from the device. Maybe T165 can be installed as a "tape" device as well?

Awesome! BTW, the folks over in the DVD hardware forum

are needing a driver for the Panasonic HS2 DVD recorder

(and other DVD recorders with 1394 DV input) so that they

can send it a DV bitstream from the PC.

Not to put more work on your plate, but I'm thinking

once you figure out one driver, you'll be able to

create other drivers fairly easily (that are needed

as new 1394 devices hit the streets).

Leszek,

Installing it as a tape device should get us most of the way there. I'm looking for the ability to change channels and submit scheduled recordings, in addition to what can be done just reading and writing transport streams like a tape device.

--Rick
Ron,

I figure once that basics of the driver in place it should work for most any AV/C compatible device with a little bit of tweaking, even 169time.

I have a Sony 34XBR2 here that I could try the same

trick on. Results later.

I think I see the problem. Windows XP recognizes the

34XBR2 as a Sony device. When I go to Sound, video

and game controllers to select a driver, there's no

JVC Tape Device to select. Just some game port controllers.

I believe it has to do with how up to specification

the device Config ROM is. If the Config ROM is an

older version or non-existent, then Windows XP let's

you install anything. If the Config ROM is a nice up

to specification one, it knows what drivers are really

available, and doesn't allow just anything.

We saw this here at work. If we use an old junky Config

ROM that I stole from a DVCam and changed a few fields

in, Windows XP allows any driver to be installed. When

we use our nice up to date Config ROM, Windows XP doesn't

allow installing the JVC tape driver.

I'll bet the Config ROM on the 169time is not up to

specification, and allows any driver to be installed.

Is there any way to absolutely force the JVC tape driver

to load?

I tried backing up my mstape file, and then changing the "*" to null so that all the devices would show up. This was when I was trying to install a legacy DVHS machine as a JVC tape device. I couldn't get this to work for me although it may have been hardware incompatibility.

Sean
I've just plugged a T165 (not mine, still waiting

for that one) into Windows XP. As expected, it's

shows up as an AV/C tuner. I was able to select

the JVC tape driver, but it failed with the error

message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I tried an archive from DVHSTool just for grins, and it

complained with "DVHSTool failed to find IID_IFileSource

Filter Interface"

Any updates on this ?

I'm torn between getting a TS-165 and using my Dish for

non-OTA or getting a TS-160 and switching to DirecTV.

The ability to timeshift using the TS-165 is huge, but I don't

have the urge to run out and buy a JVC 30K. PC timeshifting

via 1394 would be amazing.

Just wondering if anyone made any progress...

Thanks,

Mark

I just got my T165. I'm doing research now.

--Rick
ricka,

Have you had any success trying to get a PC to talk to your T165?

-phil
Not yet. It took me a while to get all of the software bits. (they are in pre-release SDK and DDK's). Once I push DVHSTool 2.1 out the door the T165 is next on my plate.

--Rick
Ricka,

Thanks for looking into the 165-->PC interface. Any updates?

MAB
Got my T165 last week. Looking forward to any progress by anyone to get this 1394 T164 PC link to work. Keeping the thread alive.

My New HT:

Sony 34XBR800, Samsung T165, Motorola 5100 - Comcast, Denon 2800.2, Denon 3803, Channelmaster 4221.

I love this forum.
I'd like to keep this alive as well. Ideally I'd be able to PVR the 1394 signal like a DVHS JVC from the samsung. I'd take recording without timeshifting at least for shows being watched.
