Sister Street Fighter

While very few people on the forum seem to enjoy the rather eclectic films I do, I thought I would post my impressions of the BCI double feature release of Sister Street fighter I & II.

The first film is, well, rough, and is barely an upgrade from the DVD. This film is pretty soft, with slightly better color saturation, but only a few scenes here and there are better than the DVD. Think Clockwork Orange PQ.

The second film is a little better again with better clarity and color saturation, but still nothing to write home about. Reminds me of the Species transfer.

The 5.1 remixes are laughably bad, so no improvement on the audio side either.

Overall, there is some difference between the DVD and Blu, but for $2 more than the Blu ray you can pick up the entire series on DVD; so, although it pains me, I really can't recommend this disc.

The more I think about it the more I think I'll cancel my order for this and the Chiba films. I have the SSF DVD box with two additional films already, and this doesn't sound worth it.
I think I just realized I can wait on these as well Joe. Usually I'd be all over them even for small upgrades from the DVD age, but this being so selective with bad remixes and even halos I'll hold out for a possible J-release in a few...years? Decades? We'll see. Thanks for the impressions Pat.

I have Sister Street Fighter. I agree, the picture isn't very good, I felt like I was watching a DVD. I bought several of the BCI titles, including the Werewolf/Zombie double feature (on 2 BD-25s) and Galaxina on HD DVD. The werewolf movie is probably the best of the bunch, but certainly not reference quality.Galxina has so much noise in it, that its one of the worst HDMs in my collection. I really have to wonder how much effort BCI put into some of these discs. That's a shame, because these are exactly the kind of movies I want more of in HD, but not if they look bad.

Well from that comparison the BD has better colors and contrast.

Does anyone know if the disc is Region-Free???

Even though it might have a Region A symbol on the cover it may be All regions.

The same with the HK BD of Flashpoint that is playable in region B players according to this site:

That's horrible.

It looks like SD DVD compared to SD DVD upconverted 1080i.

I would never buy the Blu-ray for such a miniscule "upgrade". I don't even see the upgrade, I see a red push and slightly cropped image on the Blu-ray.

I'll pass.

While I don't see the difference we are used to seeing, I still see a substantial difference in those screen shots.

Guess we all have different eyes heh?

As do I, (clipped whites all over on the DVD) but really, that Blu-Ray looks like a pretty good DVD VS a really bad DVD instead of good HD period.

Thanks for those. That doesn't look too bad so I just ordered the Sister Streetfighter double feature and the Sonny Chiba double feature. I love these Japanese exploitation movies from the seventies. If only somebody would release Kinji Fukasaku's Yakuza movies on HD ...
Those discs are DEFINITALY going into my collection.

Yes they don´t have that HD pop, but that is something we have to get used to when it comes to some of these classics, as they often are shoot with soft filters etc.

The improvment doesn´t need to be sharpness, as long as the colors and the overall quality of the picture is better.

I´m also going for their Naschy double feature

We need more movies like these on BD.

I don't think these kind of movies will look better anywhere. They are shot in a soft way with inferior equipment you can clearly see that, when you are watching the movie. There is simply no more detail to show! I find it more important that this imho very good transfer removes the ugly SD-DVD noise and reproduces the colors way better.
Anyone have trouble playing back Sister Street Fighter (Blu-ray)? I noticed choppy, almost stuttering playback during several chapters throughout the complete movie. Definitely NOT a layer change.

I use a Playstation 3 and own close to 140 Blu-rays. This is the 1st film which produced choppy/stuttering playback.

Anyone else notice this? Also, please indicate which Blu-ray player you're using.

Thanks.

Not exactly what you want, but...

I didn't have any problem with the Sonny Chiba double feature using a 60 GB PS3. Haven't tried the Sister Street Fighter BD, though.
Anyone else experience the stuttering playback with Sister Street Figter (Blu-ray)? Thinking of returning it to Amazon...

I have the same problem as you're describing. I think its an issue with the encoding of the video file. I'm hoping that a future PS3 system upgrade will fix the problem, but I'm not optimistic - it's such a small title. I'm thinking of contacting BCI about it, but again, with such a niche title, I wonder if they'll bother doing a recall or even a reissue...

Hi Kisuneko,

I'm sorry to hear others are having the same problem.

Unfortunately, I already tried contacting BCI Entertainment via email, and it was bounced (returned to sender). Must be a crappy company to deal with.

I will be returning this one back to Amazon. Seriously doubt they'll re-issue this title or PS3 releasing a firmware update for this small release.

Apparently several BCI Blu-rays have the stuttering problems. It doesn't appear to affect all copies but reports on various forums indicate that a number of copies of BCI titles are defective. Is there any way of contacting BCI about this problem?
