I am in the begining phazes of putting together a family room ht in the basement (non-dedicated HT). I have had a 5.1 system for several years and have enjoyed it. I have to admit, I am a newbie when it comes to speaker set-up and so forth, but I have learned a lot from reading these forums. I have been intrigued by 7.1 but have questions about the types (not brand) of speakers people recomend. Are people using bookshelves all around, smaller satelites, or floorstanding mains with bookshelves for the surrounds and rear? Thanks in advance.

I for one use towers in front, mostly because I use my HT has my 2 channel system as well. For the surrounds I prefer direct radiating speakers, there for have chosen to use large bookshelves. If I had the room, because I do enjoy multi-channel music as well, I would opt for towers all the way around, but I do not have the room, nor could I put a tower in front of my CRT. :) But this is just what I prefer. YMMV.

I think di- or bi-pole speakers are worth a listen for your side surrounds as well as possibly your rears too. Even though I am a direct fan, I still suggest a listen to these. :)
