slightly confused about what audio A2 is outputting

Hi,

Just picked up the A2 and have it hooked up to an Onkyo 674. When playing an HD-DVD that has DD plus, True-HD, etc it seems to be decoded in the A2 and passed via PCM to my receiver. The receiver displays Multichannel PCM which is what I would expect. If I hit display on the A2 remote though it says "Digital Bitstream" for audio output.

If I play a plain SD DVD which has a DD soundtrack it passes DD to the receiver which shows DD in it's display. If I then click display on the A2 it shows "Digital PCM".

Basically the Toshiba display seems very counterintuitive to me. I'd expect it to say PCM when decoding True-HD and DD PLus, and bitsteam when passing DD. This is how the PS3 displays things.

Am I just not understanding things correctly?

thanks

Mine says the same thing. However, I'm passing audio over optical and it says 2ch in the display of the A2 and says Digital PCM is being passed when I hit "display", I can't seem to get it to pass 5.1 audio even when it's on DTS. Anyone know how to pass 5.1 DD or 5.1 DTS over the optical from regular DVD's????
The toshiba display (both front panel and on the screen) is all messed up.
It seems to be showing the S/PDIF status, not the HDMI status (and not even that is correct). Even though it sometimes says 2ch, don't worry, it's passing the correct signal.

Also, for some reason, the HDMI and S/PDIF audio settings seem to be interactive. For example, even if you aren't using S/PDIF, changing the setting on the A2 from "bitstream" to "pcm" CAN affect the quality of HDMI.

What your recv'r is showing that it's receiving from the A2 is the important thing.

Thanks, Yes after doing some reading last night I read about the S/PDIF bug. If I change to PCM I this seems to resolve the above mentioned display issues and gets mw the 96KHz audio. But as mentioned the sound quality suffers
. Oh well. I can live with the Toshiba display being messed up for now.

thanks

Im still a little confused. I picked up the d-2 at costco yesterday and im trying to get the right audio settings. i have an onkyo 604 and have it hooked up why hdmi. I also have a ps3 and it seems alot easier to understand. I want to be able to heard dolby true hd and dolby plus on all five channels. What do i set the digital out spdif and digital out hdmi to.
Set the HDMI to auto, and leave the S/PDIF as bitstream. On your receiver you'll see trued hd, and dolby plus showing up as MC PCM because it's getting decoded on the A2. Regular DD and DTS from SD DVDs should still pass this data via bitstream and you'll see your receiver showing that.
