Slink-e question

490 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  barhoram
Hi all,

I've been made a pretty good offer for a slinke which I was thinking about using to develope the DTP Slinke plugin sometime in the future.

The question is this:

It's a v2.0 Slinke and not the newer v3.0.

Are are there any significant functional differences? Should I take it, or should I buy a v3.0 (for more $$$) instead?

Thanks,

Stan

Stan,

the major difference between the 2.X series and the 3.X series is the new Xantech interface (different IR setup...supports xantech stuff as well as the other IR).

Programmatically, and interface wise they are identical.

Thanks Rich,

Do you know if that means that they changed the IR handling routines and such? It would be a shame to buy the unit just to find out all the new ones won't work with it! :)

Stan
Stan,

Actually, from what I understand, the major change includes an "addon" that they developed to correct voltage levels and signal format to work with the xantech -> but only on 1 of the IR ports. The format of the IR files (.cde) is exactly the same, as the IR signal is processed upstream of the IR -> out interface (either to the xantech port or the built in IR zones).

I currently use a v2.5 slinke for my HA system, but I have written software against a 3.1 slinke for another project, and the device files and method calls/returns from the COM object are the same.

Oh, and there is one other minor change, that is fairly technical and most users don't use (or even know about). The slinke also support digital I/O (for switching or monitoring of an outside device) and there is a minor change from v2.x to v3.x. The 3.x now triggers a status change when a bit is changed from an outside source, whereas the 2.x required the program to check the bit state. I don't use the digital stuff, so it hasn't ever been an issue for me....most users don't even know about it.

HTH

I know this is going to make me look like an ignoramus, but I'm darn curious. What exactly is a slinke? I assume we aren't talking about something that goes down stairs alone or in pairs.
Slink-e info at http://www.nirvis.com/
does anyone have better software than cdj to control a Sony Jukebox? I like the functionality of it, but the interface leavs much to be desired. Drew
Hi boykster and bornroam:

boykster:

Darn, I wish I knew this sooner... I blew my chance to pick it up and he sold it to someone else... guess it's time to wait around for another one, but it's not a big deal since I'm not ready to start working on it yet (IR comes first).

barhoram:

Eventually, I've been in contact with the Slinke people and I may be making a replacement CDJ program after the DTP stuff has settled down.

The original plans are for a CDJ control program, then sometime in the future a new program that completely replaces CDJ.

eisenb11, your CDJ replacement can't come too soon for me! I purchased a Slink-e, and while I love what it does with the CDs in the changer, it doesn't work well with files on disk.

I had hoped to be able to program a single playlist from my megachanger and WMA lossless files on hard disk in such a way that the WMA files would cover the time it takes to change CDs in the changer. CDJ is supposed to do this IF you can stand the sound quality of MP3s (I can't).

Now I'm hearing that CDJ is no longer being developed, and have even heard a rumor that Nirvis has been sold to Microsoft.

Keep me up to date on your progress, please. And if the final product could use PowerDVD filters to output DPLII through my Delta 410, that would be heavenly gravy.
Hi Dr. Benson,

The switching from CDs to MP3/WMA is a really cool idea that I will have to look into.

I have somone who represents me to the Nirvis crowd, and from what I understand, Slinke belongs to MS (but they're leaving it alone for now) and the programmer was also hired by MS to work on some other stuff. CDJ has a new programmer who is making (or trying to) bug fixes, but it is no longer under official developement.

I am definately planning on making a CDJ replacement, but the question of when is hard to answer since there are a number of things that I first need to do with my DTP program (but Slinke is high on the list).

Not sure about the DPLII thing on your Delta 410 though because DTP doesn not currently interract with other drivers.

Some day in the long long future I am planning on writing my own DVD player program, but that day will probably be a long time in coming (a year maybe?)....

Ofcourse, I'm assuming that you meant to output DPLII for movie use, right?

Personally, I have my AudioPhile 2496 routed through a Marantz pre-amp (someday I need to hook up my ADA pre-amp) so I let that take care of all the audio decoding.

Actually, I was talking about using the PowerDVD DPLII filter for playing all my MUSIC. Some of us don't have DPLII on our receivers. When I play a WMA lossless rip through PowerDVD using DPLII to the Delta analog outs, it sounds wonderful. All you'd need would be amps or active speakers.

I suppose the fantasy would be to digital-in the megachanger to the Delta, then play both CDs and WMAs through the DPLII filter.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner Stan....I haven't been reading this forum as much as I usually do...been reading the plasma forum as I'm about to take the plunge and buy a new 42" panel....

Good luck...many ppl would appreciate a replacement for the aging but venerable cdj program...

Rich
Hi Dr Benson & Rich,

Dr Benson:

Ah, I see what you're saying. That's a hard one to say for sure right now, because it involves tying into another program's audio filters. From what I've heard people have tried that before with PowerDVD, but I haven't heard yet if it's possible... or if some kind of video stream must be present.

It'll be a while before I get to that part, but I'll have to do some research to see how to tie the filter in... perhaps there's a method in Windows to do it by some sort of redirection...?

Rich:

Thanks, I can't wait to get to the CDJ part... should be a lot of fun!

When you look at the new version of CDJ, take a look at the software for the Escient Tunebase controllers that use something similar to a Slink-E. I have used the Tunebase, and love the jukebox front end. However, I really miss the MP3 and X-10 possibiliteis that a computer (PC) based program allows. For those with the Slink-e, check out the X-10 program Homeseer. It will allow you to use inexpensive x-10 wall keypads to use for inputs to CDJ (play, pause, stop, next, random, load playlest, ect) Mine rivals an expensive custom system for 1/10th the cost. Drew
