Looking to find out what my options are in terms of outfitting my living room and rooftop with an audio setup. I don't feel as if I have the space for large towers/monitors to the left and right of my TV I have no experience with in-wall/in-ceiling speakers I'm not sure if they are the route to go...... Outdoor speakers are also foreign territory for me and I'm not sure If i should just use a receiver downstairs within the TV cabinet and fish wires up to the roof or use multiple receivers, one upstairs one downstairs? (logistically fishing wiring wouldn't be too difficult)

Looking to find out what my options are in terms of pros vs. cons and types of equipment I will need for a given set-up. The source for all of my music is a Home Theater PC (HTPC) located in the cabinet below the TV. Conceivably, I could use a smart phone to control the music if I were to only use one receiver downstairs... but again don't know if this is the best option.

Personally, I'm of the "use a second receiver" camp. a LOT less wires and configurations to worry about. I have a deck theater and made some minor modifiactions to this to turn it into an outdoor equipment cabinet that I leave out all season. I use a receiver, a DVD player and a Roku box. I mounted outdoor speakers to the deck railings and store the sub in the bottom of the cab and pull it out when I set up. I use a small business class projector and made a screen on a wooden frame that I attached to poles mounted to the deck. Set up/break down for movies is 5 minutes each. For music I just pull out the sub and turn on the amp. Even my wife can do it! Easy enogh to add a cable a box to it.

I'm thinking the same, any good resources on how to conquer my living room? I'm assuming the window directly opposite my TV makes any sort of non-angled (i.e. in wall) speaker set-up a problem. Or do they make in-wall speakers that can pivot around their outer housing for that specific purpose? I can't imagine in-ceiling options being much better....

That's a tough space. If it were ME.....I'd probably kludge up a mount from the ceiling that would dropdown a little ways yet mount the speakers in an upright position so that they could be swiveled the way you want them. I really think you need to make something to do what you want.

how deep is the wall the TV is mounted on?

A Triad In Ceiling Omni 8 is just under 8" deep.

Drivers are mounted on a 45 degree angled baffle recessed behind the grill.

Not cheap, but a great sounding speaker for odd applications.

Had a chance to measure yesterday.... it's little less than 4" and that won't cut it.


Coordinated with MyerEmco/MyerConnex in DC as well; they seem to think a Leon Sound Bar would work well in the space.

I've never heard of Leon and don't really have a desire to match my sound bar to my Panasonic ST50, but again no real familiarity with sound bars and there isn't a whole lot on the forums about Leon. Seemly less expensive options exist in the Atlantic Tech FS-5000, but not many reviews/comparisons exist.


Thoughts on a Sound Bars in general as well as the compromise for aesthetics vs. audio quality?

Well there are sound bars and then there are sound bars.You have the cheezy plastic and cardboard HTIB type, and, then you have the real speakers............

Leon, Atlantic Technology and Paradigm all come to mind (I'm sure there are others) when discussing the sound bar as a single long narrow wall mountable enclosure housing LCR speakers, with dedicated inputs for connection to outboard amplification and processing. Never installed one but have been contemplating the possibility for my great room with a bad layout due to fireplace and window placement.

Saw a really impressive install Leon did at the Univ of Michigan. Impressive because it was very inconspicuous but delivered.

I get the feeling the Leon and Triad lines are cut from similar cloth in terms of level of craftsmanship and customization offered.
