I have a small loft in which I have my TV, computer, and couch. It's not an idea HT by any means. But I have some $$, and want to get something going. The room is maybe 12x12 with the couch against one wall.

I'm looking at the Denon 5803, but not sure about the speakers. Yes, I know the 5803 is way overkill for my current needs. But I want something that has component HDTV switching so it will work for years to come. I'm also a computer geek, and like lots of buttons and knobs.

But I'm not sure what speakers to use. They need to be small and mount on the wall. The couch is right against the wall, so I know putting speakers back there will result in less than stellar sound. But it's the only room in the house that I can use. When I get a bigger house I can expand.

I'd be willing to pay $2000 for a good 6.1 or 7.1 speaker setup. What would anyone recommend for this small space?

Hello yngdiego

I heard the KEF KHT and thought it very good for the money -- and a much different look, small enough to work well in a constrained room. There are better subs for the money (M&K, Sunfire. HSU). Acoustic Research also has a wall-mounted solution I have not heard but have seen recommended on this board a couple of times. It has a corned-fitted speaker which might work well in your situation.

with the couch right up against the back wall I saw one diagram that had the rear channels behind the couch shooting up. It was really a great idea so I though I would share it.

I'll vouch for the Encores. I have them hooked up to a Marantz SR-7000 and they fill the room nicely with sound. I have the fronts on stands and the rears hooked to the walls with the included fixture.

My LR is 13x19 with an open side to the rest of the house, and I have more than enough sound when the volume is at reference level. On the Marantz that's 75 db.

I've got a Denon 3802 hooked up to Boston Acoustic Bravo speakers and a SVS PC31 sub. This setup has a great sound and DVD movies sound better than any theater I've ever been in. The Bravo speakers are compact and have many mounting options.

yngdiego,

You should give a serious look at the Mission FS2-AV system. I think this would probably serve your needs quite well and is well within your price range. It's retail price is $999 and that includes a nice little sub woofer. The fronts and surrounds are the same speaker, nice and slim and will fit in corners nicely. There is a current review of this system in the June issue of Home Theater magazine. Check it out.
