Hi,

My "strategy" for multimedia and home automation is to go for multiple smaller PCs, instead of one big machine (a bit like Google does
). So I'm looking for small and cheap PCs. They don't have to be very powerful.

One big constraint : it should run Windows XP (Vista or Win7 is a bonus, but not required). I know Linux is easier to run on small hardware, but as I develop everything myself I really need Windows.

Any suggestions ?

Intel Atom 330 mini-itx boards start at ~65 and just require memory, a case and a power supply. Combine them with a case like the M350 or an Antec ISK300-65 and you've got just about as small and energy efficient as possible.

You might want to consider something like the Acer Aspire Revo or the Dell Zino HD. Both have small form factors and are definitely workable as an HTPC. I've seen refurbished Revos for as little as $110 in a dented box sale. I think they usually sell for just under $200. The Dell Zino is a bit more expensive but you can customize it to suit your needs. I believe the basic model is either $199 or $249, depending on if it's on sale.
