I've searched here and APC's site, but I'm not finding an answer. What I need to know is if I can plug a Smart Strip into the back of my Rotel RLC-1040 (rebranded APC H15). I've seen warnings against plugging a strip into a UPS but not just a line conditioner/surge protector. The reason I want to do this is I've got a Pioneer receiver without a DC trigger and I plan on getting an amp. So I was going to plug the receiver into the Smart Strip's control plug and a RatShack DC cord into one of the switched plugs. The problem is, in my apartment where my equipment is, there is one outlet, and one of it's plugs is connected to the light switch, so it's not always live. We have a light plugged into it. Otherwise I'd just plug the Smart Strip into the other plug.

So... am I SOL until I get a house, or would it be OK to plug the SS (with the receiver and DC trigger plugged in) into the Rotel?

Easiest solution is to use a wall wart with the right Voltage for your amps trigger and plug it into the back of your receiver. Your receiver will have a switched and unswitched outlet so plug it into the switch if I remember right and everytime you turn on your rec'v the amp will come on.

Thanks for the response Kevin, however I neglected to mention that my Pio receiver is the VSX-1018, which does not have any outlets. So my options are:
  • Plug the Smart Strip into the wall, and always leave the lightswitch on and turn off the lamps manually, or have to turn the lights on whenever the amp is needed, even in the day [either of these scenarios would have a VERY low WAF, especially since I'm trying to add the amp on the sly
    ]
  • Plug the Smart Strip into the Surge Protector/Line Conditioner, which is what I want to do, but need to know if it's safe
  • Get into the outlet and see if its setup in such a way that it's easy to disable the outlet being powered with the use of the light switch - I found some how-to's online, but none had diagrams or were as detailed as I'd like
  • Or the option I like the least - wait until I have a house, which is probably still a good while away

So.... has anyone else had to deal with something similar? I was hoping since only the AVR and the 12VDC adapter would be plugged into the Smart Strip, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. But I really don't want to try it until someone with the proper knowledge assures me that it will be OK.

Thanks in advance for anymore replies.
