Hello all,

I am having trouble ripping home-made DVDs with SMARTRIPPER.

I use SMARTRIPPER all the time to save DVD clips, however, when I try to rip my home-made DVDs I get an error.

It starts to list the files and then I get a message that reads, “Access Violation at Address XXXXX in Module Smartripper.exe.â€

I have several DVD’s that I made with a stand-alone Panasonic recorder and I will be very upset if I can not save a few scenes to my hard drive. When I explore the files of these DVDs they appear to be the same as professionally recorded ones. They play normally on the PC so why can’t SMARTRIPPER access them?

I hope that someone can guide me around this problem.

Thanks much!!

Torre;

Just a thought: Have you tried to copy those files directly via explorer to your HDD? I am not familiar with the Panasonic recorder but those files/DVDs might not even be encrypted.

Great idea!

I have not tried a simple cut and paste.

I will try it tonight and report back.

Thanks.

I still don't understand why SMARTRIPPER can't do it though.

Also, try to see if you can rip it with SmartRipper using the recorder drive itself (instead from a DVD-ROM).

On my setup, I use DVD-RWs (It's about 25 cents more than a DVD-R), and my DVD-ROM plays it fine - but when I use DVDDecrypter, it reports that there are 6 GB of data on the DVD-RW (which is not possible). So, any attempt to DVDDecrypt them are useless. Putting the DVD-RWs in my Pioneer recorder, DVDDecrypter works fine - I'm blaming it on the firmware of my DVD-ROM.

Thanks Budiman,

Unfortunately, my recorder is a stand alone unit. I do not have a DVD recorder in the PC.

Axel,

I did a simple "copy and paste" and it worked fine. Thanks.

Maybe SMARTRIPPER was confused since the files were not encripted.

Also, the files were large. Some were over 1 GB.

Thanks again.

I am glad to hear that, Mark. It is interesting you mentioned that you have files over 1GB. What's the exact size? So far in the DVD world everything I came accross was limited to just 1GB.

Actually, they show-up as about 1.001 GB. So they are just a hair over.

I did not know about the 1 GB max, but it now makes sense. I had recorded a couple of movies off of HBO and there are no "chapters". The files show up as several files at 1.001 GB.

Thanks again.

1gb max is for Win9x and other os's that can't handle files over a gig. NT, 2000 and XP all can handle over a gig.

Actually, technically, the file limitation in Win 9x is 2GB and it is related to the fact that it uses FAT-based file system. The other OSes use NTFS and can handle files bigger than 2GB.
