Maybe the prices on these sets with the original cast have recently come down, but this is the cheapest I have ever seen, the usual price anywhere from $50-70.

Target can really surprise you sometimes. I'd been on the fence for years for these, but at this price, I went for them.

I bought these with trepidation, figuring there will be lots of unfunny stuff- even at the time I could tell a lot of the shows just sucked out loud. But there should be $20 worth of yucks per year. And DVD resolution won't be bettered on old videotape.

That's a good price they're 27.99 per season on Amazon.

Lowest I've seen was June 28 through July 4th of this year Target had Saturday Night Live Season 1 - 4 for $16.99 per season.

I need to keep a closer eye on Target then.

I suspect DVD prices are due for a big collapse in the coming years.

Since I sold off my home theater to put together a small music studio, I'm down to just a cheap DVD player and 27" CRT TV. So I've not been watching the blu-ray thing too closely. But I went into Fryes the other day to pick up some electronics parts and was kind of suprised to see that they've recently replaced a large chunk of what was the DVD section with a blu-ray section.

Hmmm. I guess if that's true, then it might be time for me to actually start buying them.

What I've really been waiting for to come out is the early, 30-minute Canadian episodes of SCTV (no clunker skits there, like with most of the SNL episodes, other than from around the Hartman years, which had about the best hit to miss ratio IMO).

....and...how are the discs? I am seeing posts, but no real reviews! How is the PQ and AQ?

And is that the price for seasons 1 - 4 or per season?

That's per season.

I've only watched a little of show #2, which was before they found their rhythm and final format. They still had several musical acts- Paul Simon and Randy Newman. But the videotape looked good. But this is 1970's videotape. Don't be expecting stereo or crystal clear video.

And, as a caveat, a friend bought season two sometime back, and she and another buddy tried to watch several shows one night and just fell asleep. Also, Jane Curtin, in an recent interview, commented on her daughter's reaction to these early shows, saying her opinion was "why do people think think this era was so funny?" Jane also had a mixed opinion of the early years. She was the one cast member who never misbehaved, was always there on time, and always knew her lines.

You may be waiting for some time. The last-released boxed set of SCTV featured those early years in a truncated form. Apparently they didn't get permission for a lot of the footage they used back then. I agree that was the funniest stuff. I bought sets 1-3 and got bogged down after just a few episodes in box 1.

The taped nature of those later shows is pretty off-setting. Everything seems stark and lonely. But there is a good deal of funny material nevertheless.
