So little HD out there, why do we bother?

I"m trying to view this on a nation-wide level, but even the Satelite option doesn't seem all that much better. So I want to ask these two simple question...

How many full-time High Definition channels do you get?

How many part-time High Definition channels do you get?

Fulltime: I have 2. Those are PBS and Discovery.

Partime: I have 3. Those being CBS, ESPN, HBO (occasional 4x3).

So, even my HD viewing is split 50/50 with stuff I want to watch actually being in High Def'. I could use an antenna and get two more local channels (NBC and FOX), but their HD programming is limitted at best, and even then I have to worry about transmition/reception issues. Sometimes HD programs on CBS come through as regular 4x3.

So, why all the hype/advertising?

Should I use DirectTV/Dish/voom just to get a true HD viewing, or are they guilty of the same partial Hd programming?

How much TV do you really want to watch. I know after Sunday and 3 NFL games I am worn out. Voom has alot of content but programming is hardly quality. There is alot more out there than most have time or the desire for. You just have to chose the source.
Full time HD: 6

HDnet, HDnet-Movies, InHD1, InHD2, Discovery-HD, TNT-HD

Part time HD: 9

Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC, WB, PBS, ESPN-HD. HBO, Showtime
BB_Mike,

You're in a Comcast market in Madison, AL, right? Do you guys not get InHD & InHD2? Also, I think it might be worth your effort to put up an antenna for NBC and Fox. NBC does almost all of their primetime programming in HD, and Fox does a whole lot of live sports these days. ESPN2-HD is starting in January, too.
Talk to your parents or grandparents, depending on your age, about the big deal when Bonanza and Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color were just about the only regularly scheduled programs shown in color...
Feel free, Mike, not to bother if you don't find enough HD to suit your needs.

I am, but I was already with Knology before getting my new TV. Comcast has, I believe, NBC which Knology does not. I wanted to stear clear of the IN-HD option before I knew more about it. Honestly, I haven't watched a single "regular TV program", like CSI, in High Definition in the 3 weeks I've had this 52" DLP set.

I am guilty of assuming that normal programming would always be "enhanced" to HD quality. Much like HBO does for their movie, or Voom is rumored to do with their lesser content. Not for all programming, but at least the popular hour long programs.

Knology offered me the DVR capable STB, comcast pleaded the 5th..

Here are the network TV ratings from the week ending October 17th (the last weekly ratings released by Nielsen).

Of course they do not include cable fare from ESPN, Showtime, InHD, HDNet, or the myriad VOOM channels.

In my mind there is plenty of TV in HD -- although more would always be appreciated.

Kuch,

They only had The Shadow, on radio.

Fred,

I don't mean to sound like a cry baby. I can't just let it go, I'm mearly searching for the best provider. It's just that I find myself watching AND recording Discovery HD, solely becuase it is in HD. Quality over Quantity, I guess.

Edit- I saw your reply late Fred. Thanks for that info. I need to look into WHY my local providers do not actually send on the HD format! So it really is area specific. I really need to move. :D

BB_Mike,

It does sound like HDTV is not yet ready for your expectations. It will likely be two or more years before the programming will reach the levels that would likely satisfy you. So you can save some $$$ and a lot of frustration and just check back then.

Please remember that the Providers (Dish, DirectTV, Voom) are not the same as the channels. Its the channels which decide how many shows are in HD, and whether not to be 100%.
Who needs full time channels? There is more HD out there than I can watch and I just added an HD TiVo. With virtually all the network shows (expect the reality crap ) in Hd as well as HDNET Movies, HDNET, Discovery, BRAVO, HBO and Showtime you could spend 5 hours a day and not see it all. If your'e watching more than that you need to get a life... :)

In fairness, there tons of us who are barred from getting the HD networks so your list doesn't apply to us. Even without networks though, I'm ok with the amount of HD available. It's mostly due to Tivo though since it ensures that there's always something waiting for me to watch when I get home.
Joker you're in Bellevue, do you have trouble receiving the networks OTA?
It doesn't make much sense to classify full-time or part-time outside of movie channels. I don't consider SciFi parttime programming because they have late night blocks of infomercials. If you are going to watch a channel 24/7, than you only need one "full-time" channel to be satisfied. Otherwise, 15 part-time channels will likely have something you want to watch in HD at just about any time. Especially since the vast majority of original programming is in HD.
