The downside? MS might fix this in a next SP and disable it, leaving you without your data. (That has been discussed before and that is the main possible draw back)

You can't boot from a software raid! So you need a minumum of one HD for booting plus X drives depending on your raid configuration.


I compared XPs software raid 0 with a promise and a sil 680A raid cards and XP's software raid beat them in every test. Of course those two cards

are low end raid cards and are basically done in software anyways.

It you have the Windows XP install on a separate drive and that drive goes down, would the new installation recognize the software RAID 5 array?

The Firewire 800 would cost me more than double the cost of the Firewire 400. Do you guys think it is worth it for RAID 5?
