The answer to your questions lie within. Within these forums. I would NOT take an AV company's word for it. Research here. The only thing you might regret is spending more money that you planned on, but there are a ton of great speakers for $500 or less for a home theater. Put the sweat equity into reading. For that budget, and I'm a Klipsch guy, I'd recommend the Klipsch RP-8000F. Klipsch has a whole Reference Premier line to match it.
